Our six year old has adhd, ocd, auditory processing, sensory, etc. and has an appointment to be evaluated for pdd-nos. Anyway, what I'd like to see is if anyone has had success in getting their child to sleep when they have trouble settling. Last night he was up almost ALL night tossing and turning- literally! And he's good to go and in fine spirits this morning. We do all the "sleep hygiene" stuff- bedtime routine, books outside of his room, etc, etc. Seems he's still got major hyperactivity and compulsion to pick his skin... put those together and we literally cannot leave him in his room by himself. The good news is that once he falls asleep (whenever that should be!) he usually stays asleep for the night.
Can anyone relate? Anyone have suggestions? oh yeah, we've already tried melatonin, which worked great for about two weeks!
kakie40482.3091782407I tell my son to close his eyes in his darkened room, be completely still, andMelatonin works here. I have tried sleepy time tea and had some success with that. It may have be placebo effect, but she loved feeling like an adult drinking her tea.
Another vote for melatonin. I used to read to her for 45 minutes but found she needed more sleep and this was really difficult to spend so much time with a bed time routine with an earlier bed time. We use 0.5 mg - we cut in half a 1 mg pill. More than that gives her vivid dreams which scare her. Works about 1 to 1.5 hrs after taking it. She was very wound up/hyper as well and this calms her right down. JEALOUS!!! The melatonin worked for a couple weeks and then tapered off until it didn't do anything. I think we finished by giving him three tablets which ended up doing nothing! ughhh.
