son is taking focalin xr with intuniv. | ADHD Information

Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting but my 5 yr old son was diagnosed with ADHD about a month ago.  He started taking focalin xr 5mg and it seemed to really make him focus but was tired and didn't eat.  After about 3 wks taking it I noticed it wasn';t working as long and by 3 he was bouncing off the walls and coming down he would get angry.  So my ped added reg focalin 5mg to take at noon, this made him a zombie and he had the worst outrages.   Now she has him taking focalin xr with intuniv and still taking the reg focalin at noon.  Today was the first day we did all three and he did so good during the day, but around 530 he just became a diff person, he was throwing things, screaming and just out of control.   after about 1/2 hour of this, he stopped and you wouldn't have know anything just happened.   I can't take this, is this normal until his body gets used to it or is this something that is just not working for him.    Has anyone else experienced this.   Thanks

My son is 9 and ADHD and ODD and cannot take stimulants due to the fact that he becomes mean on them. We gave up stimulants and tried Inuniv and he did the same thing. I could not live with him hitting me - it was quite scary living that way. I to to the point where I said I dont care if he doesnt focus in school he cant live here like this! We are in our 2nd week of no drugs at all.

He can still be mouthy and still aggravates but no extreme anger. I think the residual anger is learned at this point - if he kinda hits or throws things. So I am hoping it will end soon.

As for your son, I hate that you have to keep trying different meds but many people say it is worth it if you find the right one. We unfortunately did not.

If you ever decide to take him off of them look up the anti viral antifungal thing that they are doing for Autism. I have just started loooking into this and am hoping for a miracle.

Make sure you get a really good high epa omega 3 fish oil. And other people have been talking about Phosphatydlserine on the alternative med section.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for replying back!  I checked on the antifungal thing and oh my gosh this makes total sense.  I am going to talk to my doctor about this because my son has been on antibiotics like every 6wks for sinus infections.  This boy has been on so many diff antibiotics!  he has had his adnoids out twice and had his tonsils out.   He still is getting sinus infections and i don't know why.   I bet this is why we are having these ADHD issues.  He has to have an over abundance of yeast in his system.   Thanks, Rhonda

What you saw is called rebound.  It's the coming off the medication and that awkward transition time.  Some kids have trouble with rebound, while others don't.

Keep in mind that it'll take 3 weeks for the Intuniv to build up fully in his system.  Since Intuniv is a 24-hour medication, it should help ease things after the stimulant (focalin) wears off.  I think you'll have to be patient awhile and wait to see how this combo. works for him.

I hope it works out!
