Son on Concerta and Mean? | ADHD Information

My daughter is 8 and started Concerta 2 weeks ago as well.  I have the opposite problem.  I ask her to simply zip up her coat and she cries.  In her drama class, the teacher was disciplining 2 boys and she couldn't stop crying.  This had absolutely nothing to do with her.  I am so afraid to say or do anything because she will start crying.  I am wondering the same thing as yourself.  Is this the Concerta doing this?
My 5 year old son started taking Concerta about 2 weeks ago.  The first week went well - he seemed a bit calmer and I know was doing better at school. The second week has been a bit different.  I know school is going better but in the evening, he is well just mean. Very short tempered and yelling about everything. Is this the concerta?

ChristyH,

it sounds like rebound to me.  My son was like that too when he first started on meds.  I read somewhere on here that the rebound was worse if the medication dose was not high enough, and it was right!  When we increased the meds a little the rebound stopped.  They also get used to it, it takes a couple of weeks.

Brownie, Concerta can cause kids to be a little sad.  Maybe the dose is too high?  My daughter got a little teary the first 2 times she took it.  I cut back to just 10 mg Ritalin for a few weeks and then we were able to go back to the 18 mg Concerta, and no more tears.

Thank you ChristyH!

Was at the doctor last week actually and he truly has no idea as to what to do.  His suggestion was to take her off for 2 weeks and then put her back on for 2 weeks and see if it is the meds causing this "sadness".  I thought this was a very wrong solution.  I will give him your suggestion and see what he says.  The doctor is always quite reseptive to suggestions.

You have been very helpful and do appreciate your input.
