problems with grades all of a sudden | ADHD Information

Another option is to have the teacher check the assignment book before he leaves the room, or the teacher can give him a peer buddy.  Your son could make sure he has the assignments written down the same way the classmate does.  If your son wouldn't remember to check, it could be the classmate's responsibility to do this.

If you have a 504, this is an easy thing to have written into it.  Even without it, my child had awhile where his teacher checked his assignment book daily to make sure he'd written down things properly,

It's been awhile - I have 2 children 8 (almost 9) year girl with ADHD-impulsive/hyper & 10 (almost 11) year old boy ADHD - innattentive. Both are on Concerta and now Focalin (sp?) for the afternoon study time.

Meds made a huge difference in both my kids' lives, however, there is one thing that has come up this year that I need some feedback on:

Both my children have difficulty with knowing what they need to do for their homework. Although I tell them to write it down and so dotheir teachers, they barely write anything - so when it comes time to look over things they are clueless as to what they need to do especially if it is something like a project.

Any tips? FYI - My son is on a 504 plan but that hasn't been as helpful as I thought it would be. I want to train my son not have him depend on others. Suggestions.

Second part: My daughter's acedemics have dropped dramatically this year. 3rd grade gifted. When I checked last month she was failing half the class. I met with her teachers and they are concerned about her progress. FYI - I saw no issue with last year (I am coming to a conclusion that she had a bad teacher last year and I know 2nd grade is easier than 3rd). I helped her study for a test and she still failed it. Last year and the prior years she was one of the top students.

We did increase her dosage recently (after nearly 2 years on the same dosage) and I have seen some improvement.

Have any of you removed your child from the gifted program? Any side effects like lower self esteem or did it help them since they were able to keep up?

Also, my daughter complains time to time that she is tired during the day. But I am not sure that is the truth. My other issue with her is that she doesn't seem to know why she isn't doing well. She stares at me blankly when I ask if the class is too hard, or going too quickly, etc.. She mentioned the tired thing once or twice and once she said it was like "Oh come on already" when the teacher finishes one lesson and goes to the next one.

Advice please

If your child isnt doing well in the class it may be due to anxiety and too much pressure. Medication unlocks the childs potential but like any other child, when feeling overwhelmed or inadequate, medication or not the child will slide downward. When the child succeeds its the child that deserves the credit, not the medication because all medication does is unlock windows of opportunity . The child then has to do the work. Effective medication  creates a level playing field by allowing the child to focus so that they can meet their full potential. The curriculum at this point may overwhelm your child and she also may very well be tired as it is taking all her mental energy trying to keep up. Self esteem can indeed be damaged if that child starts to feel like they cant cut it in such an academic environment. For some children, they are better off being the big fish in the pond rather than the little fish in the sea. Why your child is struggling may have nothing to do with the meds. I would speak to the doctor as well as the teacher to get a better perspective on things before you make any decisions. Have the teacher email the homework assignment to you. I've just been
going through this with my son. I called an IEP meeting and brought
along a copy of an assignment with poor directions. Her response? Most
of the kids in class had problems with it! Duh, then it's not my kid,
obviously!

I'm not taking my son out of the gifted program due to grades. Instead,
I've taken on the school to redefine how they're grading him. He was
given an extra weekend to study for a test because they didn't send home
the book. I got them to take time tests out of his grade - he still takes
them, but they aren't counted.

The biggest thing is for us all to ignore the grades. My son doesn't test
well. There's no way they can test him accurately. So who cares what the
number says? If he can explain the concept, we're all happy with it.
