Focalin xr | ADHD Information
My son has been on focalin xr for just over 2 months. we
started him with 5mg and now he's on 10mg. He's having
nightmares and he refuses to sleep in his own bed. He's 7
and we've never had a problem with him sleeping. His doc
says that "we need to be strict with him" and its not the
meds. but it just started when we upped his dose to 10 mg.
has anyone else had a problem with nightmares and focalin? No relation to meds, but I've dealt with nightmares and they come and go in waves, and are most frequent from age 7-9 then start to drop off.

Yes it could be the meds. Add a quarter of a 3mg Melatonin at night (not the whole pill, a quarter is more than enough) and see what happens.
And pardon my boldness, but I think your doctor is an idiot... ruling out a medication problem just because he thinks you are not being strict enough is poor science.

Sometimes stimulants can increase the anxiety level in the child if the dose is too high or its the wrong med and in your sons case the anxiety comes out in the form of nightmares. This can also happen if the child also has an anxiety disorder because for some children stimulants exacerbate the anxiety level. Such a response from the doctor is negligent and ignorant. When the child is going through a trial of medication it is extremely important to be followed by a specialist in med management and this is a perfect example as to why. Please keep us posted. We will help any way we can. Good luck.
