My son (11) doesn't lie (much) anymore but I believe the tactic - "tell us the truth and you won't get in trouble - we'll talk about it so you can learn from your mistakes..." worked for him.
BUT my daughter (9) would much rather tell a lie than the truth anyday. It is driving me insane. She receives a consquence when she lies and is rewarded if she eventually comes clean but somedays she just can't help herself - it seems. She tells fibs to her friends too - not just trying to not get in trouble, etc..
She is ADHD - impulsive while my son is ADHD - inattentive. Both are medicated and we have done some recent med adjustment. I will equate some of the success of my son is that he is older.
If anyone has any helpful tips to help me help my daughter get out of this I would greatly appreciate it. I fear that she will loose friends and such since she is always telling lies to them as well. It is going to affect her socially, her self-esteem, etc...
If the alternate is more appealing than the truth, I've encouraged my kids to say, "I'm about to tell a story" or "Here's something that would be funny." Sometimes they'll actually do this instead of saying the thing I know isn't true and then my having to call them on making it up.
Over the years, we've had the same issue. It's related to impulsivity. He isn't checking what he's saying. For us, lying when the stimulant is in his system is a tipoff of needing a meds adjustment.
I have an 8 year old son diagnosed with ADHD/dyspraxia. I have noticed that he lies constantly when he is not on meds. When he is on meds he reliably trustworthy. Has any noticed this drastic difference in their child?I haven't had any experience with lying with my son yet (thankfully!) but I've read on this board over and over that people have a problem with their ADHDers lying. It seems to be pretty common.
When is he medicated? It may be that you need to make adjutments to keep him medicated the entire time he's awake. That how we do it with my son because he REALLY needs his meds 24/7!
