Drama fills our livesInstant Breakfast with a banana and ice cream for breakfast, then he would have 2 "dinners" - one at about 6 and then a second one (which was much larger) around 7:30-8 at night. I also made sure he had a daily vitamin. When it started, he did drop a little weight, but once we figured out his schedule, he stabilized and stayed right on target for his height. Is she a picky eater because of the meds or has she always been a picky eater? I'm just asking because if it's caused by the meds then it may even out after a few months. She has always been a picky eater. The meds make it worse in a way by keeping her appetite down. Today was another drama filled day. We literally worked on homework till 7pm so from 3:30 to 7 pm was a nightmare today. She apprently didn't finish assignments at school and those 2 workpages along 2 pages of HW was what she had to do. She forgot her reading book (a first) so she is not ready for the reading test. She has a hard time doing these "Drop in the Bucket" work pages. It's like she will write an answer without looking at what it is asking. Also it has several different math skills and english skills that I think she is confused. I wish I knew how to help her but I don't. We go back to the dr Jan. 6 and I bet they will up her med dose. They nurse prac wanted to up it last month but wanted her weight to come up. I am so stressed, I may tell them to put me on something. My DD turned 7 in August and she only weighs 42lbs, since being medicated (May 2010) she has taken to skipping lunch, something we only learned about recently when she had a week off school for fall break and she refused to eat lunch each day......our doctor's advice was to give her a very high calorie breakfast and good dinner and just hope that she eats a little at lunch, also give her plenty of chances to snack (healthy foods). We have to change up her lunch everyday and put in treats and surprises in the hope she eats them. She went through a phase of eating something one week and hating it the next but she seems over that now. Aside from these problems she eats pretty much anything which is good. Have you thought about the kids protein shakes you can buy, it is a good way to bulk them up without forcing food down their throats, the only thing you have to be careful with them is that they don't develop the habit of replacing their meals with the shakes. She doesn't like milk or carnation instant b'fast. And Pedisure is out too. Unless it is super sweet she won't drink it. Occassionally, I can get her to drink Herbal Life Smoothes but the only flavor she likes is Peach w/ Mango and we have to add strawberry syrup. When she shows interest in drinking that I will make her one with whole milk. She has never been a milk drinker. I had her drinking Chocolate milk but then daycare refused to let her bring a cup to drink in the morning. So when we had to stop that she completely stopped drinking milk. She refuses to eat school lunches except for when they serve yogurt and fruit saled. On days she takes a lunch she may or may not eat. But she is hungrey when she gets home. That is a huge issue cause she uses snacks after school to delay doing her work. Which is why we were working till 7pm last night. I try to make her finish a page then snack then finish another assignment. Mmcnatt, hang in there my DD who is 7 1/2 is a picky eater also, but was getting better but NOW on the meds her appetite has slowed, We go back to the dr today for a med check I an nervous about her getting weighed, she only weighed 40 or 39 to start with she is already tiny. The good thing is the meds seem to maybe be working a bit. we are ONLY on 5 mg though we tried to up it and she got the tics bad. I am with you though on the being stressed out part, BREAKS my heartNew here and I am very glad to have found this board. My 7 yr old with ADHD gives me too much drama! Everything is a chore to get her to do. Homework it seems that she doesn't even try to get the right answer. Even in her school work she doesn't try to even read the directions or pay attention to what she is suspose to do. Her behavior at school is on target though. My biggest complaint is I have no idea what to feed her. She is so picky!!!! One day she will love a meal that I fix like tacos but the next week she hates it and won't eat it. ugh!!! |
