xmas holidays | ADHD Information
Hi there , i have an adhd daughter 7, we are taking our first big holiday ever and im needing some support please around how to cope.
We are off down the south island on the 29th crossing over on the 31st coming back on the 12th , we are driving. i lost my husband (there dad)eailer this year, and the girls have come along way. Kate my execptional girl (adhd) has also been dioganosed with coexsisting disorders like obbessive compulsive and oppositional defiant disorder she can be quiet a handful but still beautiful and very bright.
For long car trips my kids can earn money (their spending money for the trip) for good behavior. Depending on our budget and the length of the drive, they'll earn from 1 to 3 dollars for every half hour of good behavior- it's good to be very specific about what you expect. We keep a written tally so they can see how they're doing.
The other other thing that we do for all holidays or events where there are changes in schedules is to make lists. We'll post a general list in the kitchen- right now it says what we'll be doing/where we'll be going on each day that the kids are off from school. In his room, my son also has a more detailed list for the days we'll be doing things he hasn't done before. This year we're driving from Baltimore to Ohio for the first time so he has a general outline of our travel plan and where we'll be staying along with reminders that we'll all have to be flexible because sometimes we can't control what happens when we travel.
Another enormously helpful thing that we discovered when traveling this past summer is that it helped him a lot to know where we would be eating ahead of time. I have to follow a gluten free diet for health reasons so I do a little research ahead of time to find places which are safe for me to eat, but then I can also give my son an idea of the kind of food available.
Nintendo DS is a godsend. Also, snacks, drinks, and ask her if she wants to
stop for a quick break at every possible opportunity - makes for a longer
but saner trip. Best bet - travel when she's asleep.thank you very much my friends i am going to be doing a lot of the driving and am now getting excited how ever both kids are going to need regular breaks to run in a park to happy new yearI rent 10 movies they have never seen, strap a movie player with two screens on the back of the headrests, and drive. Problem solved for two ADHDers.
