Camp anyone? | ADHD Information

When I was 7 and 8, my mother sent me away to sleep away camp. This
went on from June through July into August. I was adhd to the max so I
was always not getting along with people and camp was torture for me. (
there was no diagnoses of adhd then). Who sends their kids to camp for 8
weeks at a time? well, my mother did.

I decided to send both of my kids to sleep away camp from Monday
afternoon through Saturday morning, It is the first time that my husband
and I will be without kids since they were born, I am terrified for my son.
I wonder how long it will be before he alienates everyone in the bunk.

On the other hand, I think that it is only for 5-6 days so what if he
doesn't get along with others? He is not stuck like I was. Anyone have any
thoughts?

We are letting our DS, age 7 , try a 2 night Christian camp.  The camp is adding an additional teen companion for him.  He has been to cub scout camp with his father.  It almost turned into a nightmare when an older kid targeted him...but thankfully DH was there to know what went on ...and set the kid's father straight.  I would call the camp and make sure they know what they are dealing with and confirm your expectations as to what you would accept for them to do as disclipline.  Maybe special accommodations can be made for him (shorter time period, extra companionship etc.) We know and trust this camp..as our DD has attended for three years and we have a good family friend who is a counselor.  I am worried about letting my son say with anyone.. so this is a real stretch for us.

I agree..it sounds nuts to send kids away for 8 weeks. 

Really there is an 8 week camp for summer foradhd kids???? How awesome!!!

 

 

  Just joking.... I remember my very well off cousins going to a camp like that. They went several years. I am a disaster worker so chances are my kiddo's will be camping at my inlaws like they did this past summer since I was in TN from May to July. In June we are moving back to my hometown. There is an awesome Girl Scout camp there and I am going to get my kiddos involved and maybe one of their 1 week camps in 2012.
