I am new to this board but my 9 year old son I have just started on Strattera as he didnt do well at all on stimulants (tried 3 of them). On them even on week one and two with one was "grouchy", another he couldnt sleep, another he wouldnt eat. Just didnt seem worth it as we didnt see any benefits at all.
I have just tried Strattera. First 4 days on a 25MG dose, he did fine no bad reactions. Today he was upped to 40mg and he was tired for a big part of the morning but seems fine now. I read other posts that this is common when adjusting dosages. I am going to give it 23 weeks at this dose as I hear the "tiredness" goes away after a week. I have noticed he is more open to trying new things ALREADY and from what I read it really isnt even in his system yet? So I am hoping for good things. If you keep in touch I will tell you about our progress!

My 11 year old just started taking meds a few months ago. We first tried concerta, but it made him very aggressive. So, the doctor gave us a trial of Intuniv. After the trial period (2 weeks), we had to swtich to Tenex (the short acting version of Intuniv), because insurance wouldn't pay for Intuniv. Each time we upped the dose, he was very tired for the first few days, but then got accustomed to it. He still nods off in the car most days on the way home from school, but after that little cat nap, he is fine. The Tenex works great in reducing his impulsivity and hyperactivity, thus making it easier for him to stay focused. The Tenex doesn't affect his appetite, or interfere with his sleep. He takes 2 mg before school and 1 mg later in the afternoon, when he gets home from school. So far, I'm very happy with it.I am considering switching from stimulant to a non-stim. for my son. I don't feel the concerta is working for him anymore and I just don't think he is reacting well to the stimulants. Anyone have any thoughts on these non-stimulant forms; strattera and intuniv? would welcome any experience/advice. thanks!
I don't have personal experience with Strattera, but I hear it works best on inattention and doesn't do much for hyperactivity and impulsivity. The only other thing I know about Strattera is that it takes a few weeks to build in your system, so you need to be patient when starting it.
My child is doing well on Intuniv. It helps with his ADHD and anxiety disorder. However, he still needs his stimulant for full ADHD control.
