having a bad day | ADHD Information

I am a frequent viewer of this website and occasionally write in but today I
am here because I need some words of wisdom. I am having a bad day.
My husband is gone working all weekend and so I don't have any help. I
have 2 boys, 6 and 9. My 9 year old has ADHD. He is making me crazy
today. We didn't give him his medication today. Normally the mornings
are difficult before the meds kick in but it is all day today! Yesterday he
had a baseball game. He was pitching for the first time this season and
practically started crying and had to come out. We talked about it and he
said it was his 'pills'. Sometimes they do make him very emotional. My
husband and I talked about it and decided not to give them today and see
how he did at practice.

He takes vyvanse 50 mg. That works fine during the day, I wouldn't want
him on any more at this point but when it starts to wear off-boy oh boy.

I am wiped out. Exhausted. I don't mean to complain. I love my child to
death, but sometimes I just don't LIKE him! Does anyone feel this way
ever?

Thanks-just venting. Any suggestions or comments welcomed too. I am
going to try giving caffeine too. Good idea. Should I give regular soda or
diet? Does the sugar make a difference?

If you find the caffeine doesn't work, you could talk with the doctor about adding Intuniv, Tenex, or something else to help with coming off the stimulant.

I know how hard it is when you're dealing with difficult kids on your own.  My husband goes through spurts of traveling a lot or working long hours.  It's really tough, especially when your children's issues make it even harder.  Hang in there!

I don't like my kids on a regular basis, when the behavior is most extreme.

It takes 2-3 days without medication for that "bounce" to wear off. They have to get used to using the minimal self-control skills that they do possess, but it does kick back in. After a week I would say that my son is at his maximum self-control level without meds.

As far as the emotional reaction, you might need to switch to a different medication. As far as getting to his own "normal" behavior without medication, you need to plan that over a holiday and give him a few days. What you see in the mornings before meds, and what you see one day off meds are not the real him.

I don't think sugar makes a difference. I am guessing that caffeine works for mild ADHD.Jessica N40594.8592708333Thank you for your input! I gave my son a booster (5 mg
dextroamphetamine) and a caffeinated drink. Things calmed down
and we all did much better. Sometimes feeling overwhelmed just gets
the best of me. These message boards are truly a lifesaver!
