Adderall shortage? | ADHD Information

Wow, I did not realize that different generics are different. Thanks for the tip.  I have enough meds for now, but I am frustrated.  Grrr......Does anyone know anything about a shortage of Adderall XR?  I tried to fill my son's script for 20 mg today and the pharmacist called me and told me that neither of his 2 suppliers can get any right now-brand name or generic. Apparently the name brand is not available and the generic is "restricted". He recommened that I call Walgreens and have them track some down for me in one of their stores (I usually fill it in the hospital where I work). Has anyone else had trouble filling a prescription?

I went to CVS, Rite Aid, and Wallmart.  None of them have adderall.  One said mid march!!!!!

Don't go to Walgreens, they have a different type of generic from CorPharma which for me (and from what I read many others) does not work, he would be better off if you give him aspirin and tell him its Adderall.

If you use a generic, I agree to stick with the same manufacturer.  Not for Adderrall, but we've had problems with using different generics for other medications.

Is mail order an option through your insurance?  Maybe they have it?

We filled adderall RX at Vons, it was generic from TEVA - have people had problems with this company?

I have heard about problems with Wellbutrin from TEVA.

HeyStageharbor,

We have not had any issues with the generic Adderall. However, I have heard reports of problems-both from pharmacists and from a friend of mine who is a child psychiatrist (not my son's). BCBS would not pay for the generic-only the name brand-which shocked me. Usually, an insurance company will do anything to save money. I would be curious to hear about other people's experience with the generic vs name brand.

BTW, most generics are made on the same line as the look alike name brand-whether it is a medication or napkins.

I expected to see far more posts in this topic than there are--it may be
that since this is my first post to the forum, I just don't know how
to access all of the responses. I have been experiencing shortages of the
generic for some time now. I have NOT however experienced
shortages of the name brand. I find the problem to be very simple. Since
Teva Pharmaceuticals ,the "manufacturer" of the generic owns Barr
Pharmaceuticals, the "manufacturer" of the name brand, it is in their best
interest financially to create a shortage of the generic. It's only common
sense, because they can charge more for the name brand. Normally when
a drug loses its protected status other companies are already to go online
manufacturing generics, but I assume that since Adderall is a controlled
substance, there are far more stringent regulations as to what company is
able to manufacture it.

Not wanting to play into the hands of the manufacturer, I asked my doctor
if we could try another medication-- and he gave me a dexedrine XR
formulation. Unfortunately the jitteriness that resulted was rather
unpleasant. After two months I had to give it up--I wasn't able to get
anything done because of the jitters, whereas with the Adderall the very
slight jitters that I got from it weren't all that unpleasant and I WAS
able to get things done.

I guess that I have been lucky since most of the time if the pharmacy that
I deal with hasn't had the generic in stock, the other pharmacy which is a
stone's throw down the street has had it. Only once have I had to settle for
the name brand.

I'm sure that everyone has noticed that the capsules of the generic and
the capsules of the name brand are identical except for the markings on
the exterior. I don't find this at all surprising since I assume that they are
both manufactured in the same plant, on the same line,etc....

I would be interested to know if any other members have experienced
capsules that were not uniformly filled......
