Calming/focusing music | ADHD Information

what kinds/genres of music do you find helps you feel calm and/or focused?

for me most of the time dubstep will do it(anyone else find this?) . If I'm really stressed out/angry and I need to calm down any of the darker/hevier sub-genres of metal will do it.

if I'm feeling tired/sleepy dance, hip-hop, jumpstyle/hardstyle are good genres to help wake up and stay focused - or keep me energized during high-intensity conditioning.

wow. I wonder if there is a connection between metal and focus or if this is just conincidince?

just as an expermint could you post some examples of the type of jazz you like?

in return here is some of my favorite dubstep :)

I think that some of it is because of the music, part of brain is working at blocking it out and thus blocks out other distractions as well.
When I need to focus on work I listen to hard rock or metal. However, this is usually only when I know what to do and it it is simply a matter of doing it. When I need to think about/plan the work I need to tone it down a little to classic rock, smooth jazz or even some lighter metal. When I am working out a problem/solution it needs to be a lot lighter and I sometimes need to turn off the music completely.
I'm not sure I understand?on a diffeerent track...I listen to audio books to calm and help focus.  I get them from the public library downloads to a 35 dollar digital player.
I'm not sure I understand?
If you brain is working at blocking out the heavy music, it is also working at blocking out the neighbor's car or the cat in your backyard or the wind in the trees or anything that would distract you. I actually tend to hyperfocus when listening to heavy music, but at least I'm working.

I listen to audio books, too. However, it depends on the work I am doing. I do a lot of technical writing, so books are actually a distraction when the work involves interacting with words a lot. I can do things like pay bills, sort email or clean my office when listening to audio books.
