New to group | ADHD Information

Hi, I am a single the mother of an 8 year old boy with adhd. I also have a 9 yr old daughter.  I live in the Republic of Ireland and am interested in getting in touch with other parents who also live here to share their  experiences of how to cope with the lack of information and support available here. I am in the west of Ireland and there is no local support at all, I am on a waiting list to be seen by the child and adolescent mental health team for the last  and a half years and still have at least another 2 yrs to wait. I feel abandoned and at a loss. My son is on medication and that has helped but I feel his consultant is totally uninterested and thinks medication is the only answer, he never gives any practical advice on how to cope on a day to day basis or give any alternate information, he reviews him every 6 months which involves a 5 minute chat and then I'm told to keep him on the medication. I'm concerned.  I have been refused domicillary care allowance 4 times in the last 2 years and am appealing it again. Can anyone tell me how they cope over here against all the odds.
thanks for reading this.  I live in the U.S., but I want to say welcome to the board!  I'm sorry you aren't getting better support.  Post here about the specific issues you're facing, and hopefully others can offer suggestions that'll help.

So sorry to hear of your troubles!  I am also in the United States..

I felt that way with my son's first psychiatrist... all he did was keep handing us meds... I understand now that each mental health field has different roles...

hope we can help you!!  My son is 9 and has severe adhd/odd diagnosed at 3... yep - I have been through it ALL!  Still working on trying to make life easier on all of us!
