He needs to gain weight!!! | ADHD Information

It sounds like you're doing a ton to help him gain weight, it's not like he's not eating.  The only other thing I would suggest is adding Pediasure to his diet, to help add the calories.  Possibly make him smoothies or milkshakes with fruit or peanut butter to give the added nutrients/protein & calories.  Worth a try to see if it gives him a boost. It just might be his metabolism....that you won't be able to change. As long as he's eating healthy I wouldn't worry too much. It might kick in as he gets a little older. Try increasing his protein intake. You could try adding protein powder to the milkshakes and in baking things like  muffins. Which will work much like Pediasure like epokey suggested. The only thing is if you want to go the protein powder way... that you get one that will dissolve easily and not to add too much it will alter the taste if you do. I could always inbox you with the brands I use if you're interested.

My skinny boy is 10 years old. He's 54 inches and just broke 60 pounds! Whoo hoo!

Carbs are the way to gain weight. Pasta, bread, cereal. My guy wasn't gaining weight and his doctor was helping us troubleshoot why. Everyone else in our family drinks skim milk and eats healthy, low calorie snacks. The dr said to put weight on, we need to not worry so much about healthy and just put some calories into him. He'll drink a milkshake before bed when the meds are worn off. It's still got calicum and vitamins, but it's also got fat and carbs. Look at anyone trying to lose weight and they say to cut the carbs. People don't get fat eating steak, it's the potatoes and dessert that goes with it.

he does balance his healthy eating with well, a healthy amount of
junk as well (oatmeal cream pies, cake, cookies, cheez-its, ice cream, etc
etc).

If I could eat like him and be as skinny, I'd be thrilled! Personally - I think
he's just a slow to grow kid and he'll catch up eventually.

However, I am planning to switch to whole milk (for him) and use
carnation instant breakfast in the mornings and do everything I can to get
more protein/calories into him.

I think he likes being small, he gets favored a lot because he's small. The
only time it really bothers him is if someone assumes his age and guesses
lower (he's frequently mistaken for a kindergartner or 1st grader LOL).

Personally? Out of our family of 4.... I think *he's* the healthy one and the
rest of us are the overweight ones at risk of more serious health
problems.

My pediatrician recommended this recipe and for weight gain shakes my daughter loves them!

1 packet any flavor carnation instant breakfast, peanut butter, 1 whole banana, & either heavy whipping cream or half & half, plus some ice for texture. Usually it's enough that we get two servings from it.

The only thing I found with the extra carbs (ie pasta) for Mark it is stored as energy and it increases his hyperactivity. just an FYI...

Try the shake, it sound really good. Oh, have you tasted whole milk lately? Better just get a small one for him to try, it's really thick he might not like it especially if he's used to skim... My little dude, is well... just that, little.

He turned 9 last month and at his well check-up last week weighed in at
48.5lbs and was 51in tall (under 3rd percentile for weight and 15th
percentile for height).

He eats - A LOT. He sometimes has 2 breakfasts (one at home and again
at school), he eats an okay-sized lunch (not always, but this doesn't
bother me) and he typically eats from the time he gets home from school
until bedtime.

He loves cheese and crackers, apple slices with caramel (or peanut butter),
loves turkey & chicken and cereal w/ milk, etc. Carrots & dip, etc. He eats
pretty healthy (he makes good choices most of the time, I think) but he is
very picky when it comes to new textures, etc.

How do I get more calories into him while still allowing him to eat a
healthy diet like he normally does? He's pretty athletic and active so this
contributes to a very high metabolism rate I think.

thanks! :)
