Hi,
Thank you for your wonderful and educational responses! Bobel your aunt's explanation helps me. Thank you. :) One thing I do worry about is that my job as a Registered Nurse requires a huge amount of organization and focus and I wonder if I could even do my job without it? I suppose I could try learning coping skills and the like from a therapist or someone, but I worry because my job as a nurse is not one to be taken lightly. My focus and organization are critical to my job and to the well-being my my patients. I am concerned about going off meds and slipping in my abilities. Any thoughts or suggestions?? Thank you!!
I just had a conversation about this with my Aunt about that Thursday night. She has a Doctorate in Education and a bit of experience dealing with ADD. First off, she wasnt shocked at my diagnosis and was very supportive of my getting help which is always nice. It was her experience that often once the medication helps people establish structure in their lives people are able to stop taking the medication. It makes sense I guess that if I keep a structured schedule I will get used to it and maybe eventually it can become enough of a habit I can maintain the structure with out meds. Who knows, for right now I am thrilled with the changes the meds have wrought in my life. Time will tell, I am not sweating it. I have gone from terrified of Ritalin because of the substance abuse stories to thinking it is having the most impact in my life since I stopped substance abuse as a way of life... I am committed to being anal about taking it as directed the Substance Abuse Djinn is not one I ever want to release again.
Studies have shown that if you take it at a young age 80% with still need them at 13+ and 50% likelyness it will be needed in adult lives. Not sure what the new studys are for this year but that's what I know from 2004.
I personally think it depends on how bad you have adhd, ihad it as a child (never diagn. offically but back then there wasnt really adhd.. but as an adult i have managed to find coping skills some need medication forever and some need it until they get to an age where they can cope or learn different skills to manage it.
Also what works for you may not for others and if you found something that helps than great stick with it..
HI,
