You are right in that they are not determined by weight, but when dosing is being calculated weight is most definitely taken into consideration.
Ritalin SR LA is supposed to be long acting - hence the LA, but again you are right in that it depends on how your body uses it. Concerta is Ritalin, released differently.
I know that Ritalin's release has been described as (trying to put this delicately, but no way to do it), the same effect as snorting cocaine. Big high, big let down. What you're feeling Wildlad is the same. Big high, and then you think the meds are not working, but they are. The problem is that you're associating them working with that high, which might be an indication that the meds are too strong.
Talk to your doctor and see if maybe the dosage can be tweaked to help those highs and lows.

My 8yo who weighs in at 83 pounds use to be on 20mg SR (long acting) and it would be gone by noon when taken at 7:30 am. He had a piggy back dose after his lunch of 10mg. Not enough, and too much....all at the same time. Ritalin is a tough one, we switched to Concerta, which is like Ritalin. The only difference is that you don't get the slamming high that you get when Ritalin first takes effect....obviously something I want to avoid with an 8yo. Thats what you're feeling though. Dosaging of stimulant medication are not determined by weight because unlike Straterra, are not are not blood level medications. Duration of effectiveness is determined by metibolic rate of absorbtion which is diferent for everyone. Your probably metabolizing the medication quickly wildlad and maybe concerta might be a better option for you. Concerta and Ritilan are the same because they are both Methylphenidate except that Concerta has a differremt deilvery system because its long acting. Iwas taking Ritalin every 4 hours but when I came down I was moody & nasty. my Dr. asked me if I wanted to try Ritalin LA. I take it once a day it's wonderful it lasts for me all day, without the coming down effect. The Ritalin LA has that "high" effect in bursts through out the day but not as intense
