Loud music... | ADHD Information

It might have something to do with the loud music blocking out all the other noise.  I do this to block the kids fighting out in the car.  If I cant get them to shut up - then I will crank it up and that just drowns them out and I can focus on my driving again.I am easily bothered by chaos and loud noises, etc.  However, I can be driving and have Led Zepplin (or other music) cranked up on my stereo and I tolerate just fine and love it.  Anyone else?

Interesting, ADDitup. You made me remember a couple of things...

1) I can't stand listening to a radio when there's static. I'll turn it off. Same thing for a cell phone. If the signal is not clear, I get very frustrated.

2) Cicidas drive me nuts. My wife found me one day last summer yelling out the window for the cicidas to stop their infernal racket. She thought I was nuts. Probably so did they! Regardless, they didn't stop!

Well this sounds like me when my kids were younger I use to blast the music if they were fighting and they would stop cause it hurt there ears they knew I was upset if the music had to get turned up. (funny punishment heh lol) Now when I listen to my music at home I tend to have it really loud, byt if hubby or the kids have the tv/raido loud it hurts my ears. Odd cause my music is always louder I'm told. If anyone can figure this out please help. Maria

Headphones.

We have a wide variety of tolerance for noise at our house:

I need the TV loud, but the music can be playing in the background (but I can't go without it!)

One daughter is always listening to music or watching TV.

The other daughter is very studious and finds us all incredibly loud all the time.

My wife can tolerate our noise, but needs silence when she studies.

We have headphones for all the TVs, steros, etc. and my youngest and I have MP3 players with headphones.

My wife says that I am hypersensitive to sound.  Loud repetative noises like the bird squawking drives me bonkers to the point that sometimes I loose it... I use to throw things in frustration.  No I try to exit the area ASAP.  Other noise that effect me this way is dog barking/whining, I cannot do anything if a sound like this is happening.

No as far as music goes... I love to have the home stereo turned up loudly, but it must be clear, I cannot stand distortion... This has led to me purchasing really nice, but expensive speakers, and tuner... Which at the time my wife could not understand why, because I truly do not listen to the radio that often, but when I do, I best enjoy it loud and clear.

Static can't stand it so I just put in a cd. With my cell phone or any phone if I can't hear cause there is static I just hang up on the person can't stand it.  My husband likes heavy metal can't stand it cause it hurts my ears. My son plays his PS2 loud can't stand it so I make him turn it down. My daughter listens to mostly the same music I do so no problem there really but her high pitch voice kills my ears when she's upset so I must get her calm ASAP.

My guess for what most of you are saying, is that we all can tolerate
WHAT WE LIKE, at louder volumes than we can deal with for music or
sounds that we don't like!

I know that's the case with me, and makes me very grateful that I am the
bandleader. This way, I can play what songs I like, and at the volume I
like....

Since this lack of tolerance for sounds/noises of what we don't like wil
drive us crazy, and fairly quickly, control of our aural environment is
almost a necessity.....
