Driving home from work this evening, I listened on the radio to a report of a study looking at prison inmates in a high-security jail taking supplementary vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. The results were most interesting. A placebo group showed no result, whilst the group taking the supplements showed a decrease in violent behaviour.
Another study in the north of England last year conducted with schoolchildren showed similar results (ok, they're not prison inmates, but they also had a reduction in aggressive behaviour). The supplement in this case was called 'Eye Q' and is a omega-3 oil. It's available in the UK in liquid or capsule form.
ty I may talk to my DR about that :)
While this is not an Herbal supplement, I felt it appropriate to mention that I do take L-Tyrosine. 500mg/day. Though it is a nonessential amino acid, meaning the body produces it on its own. I have found that while on stimulant medications, they seem to work better when I am also taking a supplement of L-Tyrosine.Has anyone tried Attend or similar add herbal supplements?
I am currently taking Straterra, but am considering any alternatives that may work.
Thanks
Nope, nor will I
I find it fascinating that many believe because something is "all natural" it isnt a drug. Many, many of the FDA drugs were originally found in plants, Molds, fungii etc. The problem with the herbal/supplamant industry in the USA is their lobby is almost as formidable as the the lobby of traditional drug companies. How long did it take to get Ma Huang and other ephedra containing products off the market after the first high school kids had strokes? How many people died of sudden death or had strokes first? How about all the folks who died from the all natural Tryptophan supplamants of the early 90s? There is ZERO oversight on the studies done to support their claims. Most don't sight real medical studies because even the effective ones do not have nearly the effacy they claim too have. Hell, no medical research study has yet to show the wonders of garlic yet I am sure I can read all aboutr the wonders of garlique in a Parade magazine ad this sunday. I think a lot of modern herbal medicines are the 21st centuries Snake Oil.
The FDA may often fail to adequately look into Pharma company studies but no one looks into herbal ones. How many years did it take USA to recognize the all natural supplament Andro was a steroid? I think the crab from thailand, Indonesia and china tastes 3 days old even though it's labeled as pastuerized fresh. If I won't eat their seafood which is regulated i am not going to take herbal extracts produced with East Asian ingredients grown and harvested with no oversight at all.
You have no way of knowing batch, manufactuerer to manufacterur an herbal remedy is the same. The Industry hss fought every effort to regulate it and self polices about as well as the AMA. I am sure lots of herbal remedies help, are safe and, cause you no harm. You have no real way of verifing which ones that holds true for.
I am sure some producers are very strict about keeping their formulas the same. I am equally sure some aren't. All I have to do is follow the news. Every once in a while there is a report of heavy metal contamination in an herbal remedy. " . One study screening more than 500 Chinese patent medicines found that 10% contained undeclared drugs or toxic metals. In US poison control centers, there were 19,468 reports of reactions to herbal medicines in 2001, up from 6914 in 1998." http://www.itpsupport.org.uk/american/american_mar2003.htm
I also wouldn't want to bet any herbs imported from the mideast ( edit) fareast weren't treated with pesticides long illegal in the USA. As I understand it China's attitude toward safety, poloution and, ground water contamination is as dismal as ours was during our industrialization.
just my two cents...maybe an herbal remedy is great maybe it isn't. Maybe it will do nothing. I just don't know so don't roll the dice. I am sure someone, if anyone on this board reads whole posts lol feels the exact opposite as me.
BOBEL38371.3155324074I'm new to the ADD forum.
But I wanted to check on the natural supplements for ADHD as well. I was looking at Focus. Has anyone tried that or has any additional comments about that one? I've been doing research for the last 3 years on ADD and ADHD that's how long my 8 year old son has been taking prescription medicine. I just don't like the overall effects it is having on him. I've changed his diet in hopes to increase minerals and vitamins that have been depleated.
Another thing has anyone ever heard of NONI Juice? Just thought I would check.
cbaird38376.5604976852Thanks for the information, and to all that replied. I really appreciate the help.
