Over-sensitivity is classic sign of low serotonin. There are lots of things you can do for low serotonin. Krispy Kreme is a good start!
A small dose of prozac (10mg/day) would probably do the job. I've found that jogging is very effective for both sensitivity and ADD. As far as supplements, fish oil has been proven to raise serotonin levels in the brain. You could also take 5htp, which is the precurser to serotonin. If the brain is depleted of serotonin (oversensitivity), norepinephrine (low motivation) and dopamine (ADD) which is what happens under stress, supplementing the diet with precursers (5HTP, dl-phenylalanine, and L-Tyrosine, respectively) is very helpful in most cases.
I am deathly allergic to all fish/shellfish. Any thoughts on another natural supplement?I'm both hyperactive and hypersensitive to stimulus. I have to be moving all the time and I cant handle too many loud sounds, bright lights etc (I hate Walmart, but love hiking in a quiet woods, for example)I have the very same problem as you do. I hate malls, Walmart, lots of noise and people, and really enjoy being outdoors. The only thing that I have found that helps me is exercise and chocolate! :)
Evening Primrose Oil or flax seed may give you the same benefits as fish oil. I believe its the omega fatty acids is whats helpful.
I found it interesting that low serotonin is responsible for high sensitivity to stimuli. Do you happen to know of any articles which give more information on this? Thank you.
For classic ADD carbohydrates are not advised, but for a subcategory of people with ADD who also have low serotonin carbohydrates are recommended. People with low serotonin and ADD have problems getting stuck focusing on negative things. When stimulants alone are given to this group of people their ADD gets worse because stimulants increase dopamine, and therefore decreases serotonin, which makes focusing on negative things worse. Increasing both serotonin and dopamine is important for this class of people. OpenYourEyes38379.8124074074weird my Dr said chocolate and sugar am the debil to me. I guess everyone is different. As you said, Exercising very good, maybe the best remedy for low serotonin. The mechanism is simple. When exercising the larger proteins are soaked up be muscles allowing the smaller protein tryptophan to be taken up by the brain where it is converted into serotonin. This is part of the runner's high. Taking L-tryptophan has been shown to be effective for low serotonin. In the mean time...chocolate is a good quick fix, but try to eat some fiber, such as a banana, along with the sweets to keep down the sugar spike.
Have been taking 1 tbs of ground flaxseed for the past year, I'll up it to 2 a day and see if that helps. I tried the St. John's Wort before and it gave me horrible stomach pains, but I'm willing to give it another go at some point!
