At Uni with ADHD | ADHD Information
Hi Sx,
Does your university have an office for students with
disabilities? I'm writing form Canada but I read that students in
the US have legal recourse to have special arrangements for
taking tests. I hope you have that option in the UK.
I'm a doctoral student with ADD and I rely on the support of a
friend who wrote her dissertation last year inspite of her ADD. I
think that support helps... Sorry, I didn't really address your
issue. I wish I had more to offer.
Frances MarieHey everyone.
I am a 20 year-old girl diagnosed with ADHD in the past year. I have a 12 year-old brother who was diagnosed when he was 7, which has helped me understand myself better, even now! I am at University on a science based course (groan...), in the UK.
My Mum and I went through a lot of tough times, usually because of me, and we have now established that many (but not all!) of these were due to the way I think. I am now in my second year of my degree in and struggling. Due to the way I was brought up, I never had problems in school, was never slow or difficult, and I wasn't allowed to misbehave. I'm completely different to my brother. But now as an adult with ADHD, and a girl, it is hard to find help. Everyone here is so keyed up with diagnosing children, mostly boys, before they grow up with it. I was never a classic case anyway, I read and write and talk (and talk and talk and...) just fine and understand my work to a high level. As a result, the information on ADHD I have is rarely relevant.
My biggest problem is exams, I score very high on coursework but go to pieces in exams. I can't settle down to revise, however good my intentions, and always end up far too stressed out and get panic attacks during exam season. I can't even concentrate for last minute cramming! Has anyone else been here? I know I can get good grades in my exams, but with exams in 8wks and a resit in summer, I just need to overcome this. I'm starting to feel like my time here will be a waste if i can't prove what I've learned.
Any help deeply appreciated, thankyou. Sx
