Oh Please Please Please go to a Phsych for evaluation. Family doctors are great if you break a bone or have the flu, but for this unique disorder, disease, brain malfunction...whatever you want to call it.....YOU NEED AN EXPERIENCED SPECIALIST. The type of ADHD that you are doesn't matter as far as meds are concerned BUT....It can take months of adjusting dosing, times of dosing, and different meds to find what works best for you...
I would also like to recomend a couple of books to you, as I have recently been diagnosed and have been reading these books....a lot of answers to the questions I had deep down in side...you know...those shamefule deep dark secrets...that come from what we do....the things we shouldn't and we can't stop....
The books are "driven to distraction"....and delivered from distraction.....please check them out...they are a great jumping off point in educating your self about ADHD and coping..good luck :)
In answer to your last questions: YESI've been prescribed various ADHD drugs in the last few months by my family doctor, but he's no expert. Finally on Adderall (Strattera had side effects, Concerta didn't work).
I saw some stuff on this board about ADD "types." What will knowing my type do for me. Basically I am a drifter -- constantly surfing the internet at work, etc. Ignoring deadlines with extreme procrastination. Can spend all day at my job and get literally nothing done.
Should I go to a Psych for more diagnosis/help? Can he/she do anything other than just prescribe the same drugs?
Hi 1828,
The more you know about your ADD, the better. Since ADD affects each of us a little differently depending on many factors, you not only need to identify your sub-type, but YOUR sub-sub-type (I mean, how exactly ADD affects you, in both good ways and bad ways.)
While having ADD can present challenges in many situations, there are many other times when it can be a real gift. Life goes so much smoother when you learn to work with your strengths and develop support systems to compensate for your weaknesses, whether they are caused by ADD or not.
I have gone through several phases with my ADD, and each time, I thought I had discovered "the cure" (medication, coping mechanisms, support group, coach.)
As each new "cure" was found and I benefited from it, I would stop working so hard to understand my own particular brand of ADD. I even stopped going to the support group for awhile after I started working with a coach. (I found I needed it and I went back.)
What I discovered (or finally admitted) is that my ADD is not going to go away or be cured (no matter what claims might be made by various "miracle herbs"!)
The only logical course of action is then to learn as much about it as possible, and put together a complete support system to compensate for my weaknesses, and do something with my life that maximizes my strengths.
Medication can make things easier to deal with in areas where your weaknesses are holding you back, but it will never eliminate ADD. I agree with junemarie73 and also highly recommend "Driven to Distraction" and "Delivered from Distraction." They will help you understand what you're dealing with.
Good luck.
Take the test...
