Anyone able to stay on one med only. | ADHD Information

Share

My 11 year old was switched from Adderall to Concerta.  From what I have read it appears that after a while a particular medication stops working or that other meds have to be added or that dosages have to be raised.

Does anyone here (self or child) have the experience of staying on the same medication (and even better - the same dosage) without having to have changed meds, increased your dosage, or had to add another medication?

I don't really want my son to be on a medication cocktail, or have to get where he tolerates increadibly high amounts of stimulants.

Anyone here been on medication for quite a while, and had it work very well without the things I mentioned above (adding meds, dosage increases, or changing meds)?

Is there any success stories out there - of someone being on one medication for a long time - with no huge side effects and is doing well?

It is disheartening to hear all the stories of stunted growth, high dosages, heart problems, weight loss, etc.  Has there been anyone to be on one medication with relatively minor to no dosage increases who is doing very well (and has been on this longer than one year)?

Give me some hope.

Hello,

My son has tried them all, including a combination.  It got be like a regular pharmacy around here.  Then we stopped all the pills and went back to just using the Adderall XR.  And so far things have been pretty good.  Some of the symptoms the kids have to learn how to deal with and overcome.  A pill or a combination of pills will not make this go away...as I am sure you already know this.  I have had my son, who is also 11, to several therapist to try to teach myself and my son different coping skills.  Actually none of them were very helpful.  We learned nothing on how we could improve things.  It's my understanding that different drugs have different dosage regulations.  Meaning the Dr. can only prescribe up to a certian mg for children.  I'm not 100% that is accurate, but I believe I was told that.  I'm not sure if this was helpful or not, but it is not uncommon to have a combination of meds or increase dosage.

I have been on Adderal for 1 yr. I have tryed different doses, to reach the best results. I am currently on 30 mlg. sustained release, and doing pretty well.  Still, I would like to see better results. I take several supplements also. I am a middle aged adult. I have found that processed sugar greatly affects my symtoms. Also some of the additives in our foods bothers me. We have to experiment with what combination of medication, diet, and excersize works best for our ADHD. Hope this is helpfull.Christacey, my son has been on Strattera sine August & for us it has been a success.  I know that doesn't sound like a long time, but it took us forever to find the right med, & the right dose, so we are feeling very stable here.I've been on Adderall for 5 years had to up the dose 2x but never had any side effects or other problems. It's been a life saver for me.

Hello,

I guess I didn't really answer your question.  My son is on Adderall XR and has been for about 3 years.  We did at one time think maybe it wasn't as effective and put him on Concerta, with horrible results.  He became very irritable and had explosive mad fits over nothing really. So he went back to the Adderall XR and he has been much better.
