I'm a morning person. I'm the weirdo who chose "Never" in the poll. I love getting up early, and when I wake up, I'm immediately wide awake, cheerful, singing, etc. Drives everyone else nuts!
The reason I enjoy being up early so much is that I find my mind extraordinarily clear in the morning. My ideal work schedule is from about 6 or 7 am until noon or 1 pm. After that, can do "manual labor" but nothing that requires thinking until about 7 pm. Then I have another couple of hours of relative clarity before I'm exhausted and need my beauty (and sanity) sleep.
If I get hyperfocused on something (surfing the Web, writing, etc.) and end up staying up late, I still get up early in the morning. I've gone with 2 or three hours of sleep and I still get up at 5:30 AM. Of course, with that little bit of sleep, by noon I have to go to bed, but I'm bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the morning.
I guess that would explain why I married a night owl!
Just wanted to know..if anyone had this problem...same as another userFunny this should come up. I struggle everyday to get out of bed. This has occured even from my childhood. When I was in grade school my Mom would actually have to pull the sheets all the way off the bed and sometimes even remove me. I would still be half asleep. Now I still struggle and often miss classes and appointments. Like yesterday.
I think my biggest problem is getting to bed at a normal time. I never feel tired at night no matter how long I've been up. I can be up to 3 or 4 in the moring with no problem. At my doctors advise I got a sad light and it makes my mood better, but doesn't help my sleeping. I've come to terms with the fact I will never be happy in a strict 9 to 5 and will do anything to avoid it. As I've often been told I operate on Ann time. LOL
On the weekdays I have a hard time getting up I never hear the alarms I set my kids have to wake me by yelling for me to get up. I also have a hard time even getting to sleep sometimes it could take days for me to sleep. Even if I take sleeping pills they don't put me to sleep. On the weekends I spend most of my time sleeping during the day off and on trying to catch up on lost sleep. Glad I could be of help :)Hypersomnia, and inability to wake in the morning is one of many core ADD symptoms, although doesn't disqualify you if you are an early riser. Morning grogginess is also associated with morning depression.
People who have ADD have problems with the mind not shifting from the sleep state into the wakeful/alert state. Somtimes their mind doesn't become fully awake until afternoon. It's a norepinephrine disorder, and norepinephrine blockers like Wellbutrin are effective for increasing morning altertness and decreasing morning depression/apathy.
VOTE EVERYONE Let us see if this is common with ADHDI don't have adhd, but my 8 yr old son was just diaganosed with moderate adhd and he's always been the early bird in the family. Now he gets up and is ready for school an hour before it starts and he even goes to school early to help in the breakfast kitchen. We are on the second day of meds, hopefully it doesn't change all the good things about him. Great little boy!
I don't have adhd, but my 8 yr old son was just diaganosed with moderate adhd and he's always been the early bird in the family. This MAY change as he gets older. I used to hop out of bed and be ready in no time when I was that young. By the time I reached 10 or 11 it became nearly impossible just to get up for school.
I read an article the other day that said 91% of adults with AD/HD have a hard time getting up. It didn't say anyhting about children. It did, however, say that many children with AD/HD are bedwetters, because the brain has a hard time sending the signal to go to the bathroom when a child with AD/HD is sleeping. Ahem, I was actually a chronic bedwetter til I was about 11 years old.
I've never been a morning person. I consider myself a night owl. Even if I'm tired all day, I typically get a burst of energy in the evening/night. I've been told by Drs. that I might have ADD, but I've never been formally tested. I also don't take any meds. I have a whole bag of stratera samples in my closet that I haven't tried yet. I guess I'll put that off like I do so many other things.

I am not depressed in the morning some times I giggle to myself as I roll over and hit the alarm and go back to sleep...and that voice from the time I was little, the high piched one I used to yell at my Mom since I was able to talk...."I donu wannnna get uupppppp! PLays in my head and that is what makes me laugh....cause I know that the "sleepyhead kid" in me is still part of my daily ADHD life. LOL
Always have trouble in the morning. Two alarm clocks set way ahead of time...and I turn them off and go back to sleep. Late for work very often.
I don't wake up in a bad mood, I just can't do things like iron clothes, make breakfast, or anything that takes coordination. I've learned to prepare myself for the morning the night before.
My Mom always used to tell me "don't dilly-dally" while getting ready for school. Some things never change.
BTW Got a diagnoses and meds (adderall) for ADD at 40. It's already made a difference in concentration. But waking up in the morning? Ugh.
I have a hard time to get up. I usually force myself to stumble out and take a steaming hot bath to wake me up. And then i throw 3-4 mugs of coffe down the drain... and that's my morning kick-start. But I can't get my self to do that when there is nothing for me to get up to. Like weekends... and at the moment i'm unemployed...
And allot of trouble falling asleep often.... my thoughts just high-warps and won't stop.
Just set your alarm an hour early, have your Adderall/Concerta standing by with a glass of water. When the alarm goes off, roll over and take your meds, then go back to sleep (after resetting your alarm to its proper time). An hour later, when your alarm goes off, you'll have absolutely zero trouble getting up.
OH MY GOSH THIS IS THE BEST IDEA I HAVE EVER HEARD....THIS WILL WORK...HEY LAW STUDENT HOW DID YOU FIGURE THIS OUT? GREAT IDEA!!! THANKS FOR POSTING IT!!!
I had many shifts where I had to open the rink for the morning figure skaters. I had to have the rink open sometimes as early as 4:30am so the kids could get on the ice by 5:00am.
I think I'd shoot myself!

I would get fired for sure..I would never make it....
Here's my fool-proof method for getting up in the morning....
Get a Cockatoo that refuses to sleep past 9am!
Every morning like clockwork she wakes me up around 8 or 9 and if I don't get up and uncover her she just gets louder and louder and LOUDER... I have always had a ridiculously hard time getting up in the morning. If I didn't have to do anything I think I would stay in bed all day.
Not really, only when I am depressed (my poll answer) or when I don't get to bed early enough the night before. In my young adult years I worked in several Ice Skating rinks. I had many shifts where I had to open the rink for the morning figure skaters. I had to have the rink open sometimes as early as 4:30am so the kids could get on the ice by 5:00am.
