I was very, very different when I started on medication... It was wonderful. I found it wonderful, and so did my wife and children. They thought it was a miracle!
When you find the right medication, it won't change who you are or what you are capable of, it will just make it possible for you to actually do what you are capable of.
Notice, however, that I say, "When you find the right medication." This could take some time and you may have to try different medications, but don't give up until you get a result that pleases you because it is possible.
Good luck.
Looks like your in a similar boat to me then matey. Im 20 and Ive got ADD. Known for ages-diagnosed at 5. I went to a psychologist recently to enquire about going back on medication... I think it would be beneficial. unfortunately wouldn't prescripe anything due to lack of knowledge about ADD in adults. So im tackling the issue through superior knowledge. It does help knowing everything you can about the issue.
what greater victory could there be than too turn your worst enemy in your best friend. that is my intention!
Superrad, relax. An ADHD diagnosis doesn't mean you're stupid or defunct. Many of us on here are academically and professionally successful yet still suffer from the symptoms of ADHD.
You're going to be fine. Medication can't change who you are inside. It can't change the love you have for your family, your favorite hobbies, TV shows. What it can change is the way your brain functions when it comes to certain tasks-not certain emotions.
You're going to have side effects and they will go away. If you really don't like the meds, you don't have to take them. But I would first just give it a try.
It too took me a long time to find the right medication and the right tools to make my life easier. But when I found them, it was like a light coming on in a dark room for the first time in years.
And yeah, one of my tools is hanging out and posting here from time to time.
Good luck!

I was just diagnosed with ADHD. I'm 20 and have compensated for it my whole life. I'm very smart i just have always had trouble putting it into good use. I'm also very creative and have studied jazz guitar for ten years it comes naturally to me because of how it can stimulate me. I went to a psychologist and he told to try to be aware of the different forms of compensation, after i have started it i now realize how much of a hold it has had on my life.I will be starting medication on wednesday and i'm concerned with how big of a change is this going to be, what to expect. The side effects really don't worry me, it's just my doctor says its so severe and been put off for so long i will be very very different. O well sorry this is alot of babble i'm kind of confused.
