Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency | ADHD Information

Share

My brother and I both have ADHD. We are both taking 36mg of Concerta. He is 12 years old. He has Alpha-1, and I was wondering if anyone here has that, or knows anyone that has that disease and is taking stimulants? I have been worried about it recently just for the fact that it is a disease to his liver, and I know that stimulants speed up all of the organs in your body. Is the concerta making his liver work too hard? Anyways, anything would be great, I've been trying to research stuff on the net but it's a rare disease he has. School is in no way important enough to risk anything at his age. Thanks a lot!

I am gonna do a search as well to see what I come up with. I will post my findings here.  Maria

COPD is one of the diseases that alpha 1 can lead to. Chances are you will live a healthy life without having any of the diseases that alpha 1 can lead to. This is why I'm worried that maybe this medication could do something to him!

Hello.

Call me moronic, but I thought the alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency was associated with COPD. Am I thinking of something else?

Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency is pretty rare in kids.  The physician who follows your brother for AAT deficiency should be notified about the concerta, so that possible lung or liver concerns can be looked into.

OK, Hellahyper, I see what you are saying now.

Have you discussed your concerns with the prescribing doctor, as well as another medical professional so you won't be just taking one persons word for it? You could also ask a pharmacist about their opinion on the subject. You are smart to question these things, and I would continue to do so until I felt like I got an answer I was comfortable with. Good luck to ya'll.
