My daughter was born without a thyroid. Without her daily medication she would be mentally and physically challenged. Why should I withhold a drug from her that helps her grow and enjoy life just because people think I shouldn't give my child pills. Why is ADHD any different? If she truly can't help the way she acts why shouldn't I give her medication to help?

Please go to www.ParentingWithPills.comWhen I was growing up, my parents dealt with some of their poor choices and abusive situations by giving me medications. I also grew up in a home where drug abuse was common. Needless to say I had some very poor role models on parenting and responsible medical care. As an adult I was diagnosed with ADD. I have choosen to take medication to treat my ADD and this decision was not made lightly due to by backkground. I had to learn to seperate bad parenting and lifestyle choices from seeking responsible medical treatment. Giving prescribed medication when warranted is not bad parenting-- in fact its good parenting! Using drugs to replace poor parenting, chaotic lifestyle or neglect is not the same as treating a child with prescribed medicine. If you have suffered, as I have from neglectful and abusive use of medication given out by parents I can truly sympathize with you. I have been there and done that and have the scars to prove it. I will though, if the time comes and is warranted treat my children with the proper medical care that is available to us.
Very well said Fly away. There are many web sites on the Internet that are junk science and many are prompted by the Church of Scientology. Giving bad press to medication lines their pockets because they corner the market on herbal remedies. Im not knocking herbal remedies but just stating their agenda. That's why its important to learn to distinguish between good research as opposed to junk science. Thanks for sharing your story.The guy who runs that site sounds like he may need to take some medication. He's fooling himself if he thinks a judge is going to grant him custody of his children because their mother is giving them prescription medication. I can see why he's divorced and his kids are screwed up by reading his insane self-righteous rant. Obssessive compulsive?
