Wow, that's terrible! Sorry that you got such poor service! I am go through the Disability Resource Center at my school, as well. As it turns out, both of the counselors there have ADHD! They are very understanding and helpful, it's unfortunate you don't have that oppurtunity where you are. Sometimes you just have to take things in to your own hands though, maybe you could see if there are any other counselors at your DRC? If not, there are many classes offered at my school that offer anything from time management, stress relief and homework help. I guess what I'm pretty much trying to say is that maybe you should just say screw her and take care of it on your own. Only see her when you have to if you can seek help elsewhere. I get so upset when people don't know a damn thing about add and try to act like they do. I usually take tests in class, depending on how my mind is feeling. Last semester I had taken math tests in class all semester up until the last test. It was a really hard unit and I knew there was going to be no way I would be able to finish the test on time so I told my teacher I needed to take it at the drc. He cleared me and signed my form, and to his dismay I got the highest score in the class. Obviously if I took the test at the drc (Disability Resource Center) and got twice as long to take it I should have failed because I must just be totally handicapped right? He decided to tell the class when he was handing back the tests that the highest score in the class took it at the drc and that he thought the whole class should go down there and say they have test anxiety so everyone can have twice as long. Luckily, the class ended up being 5 times smarter than the teacher and chewing him out saying that you had to have proper disability documentation to be a part of the Disability Resource Center and that he knew nothing onto what he was talking aboout. I didn't say anything I was so flabergasted about my score. After class, however, I decided to stay after and tell him how rude it was that he said stuff about something he knew nothing about. I told him that I wasn't an idiot, it just takes me a lot longer to figure stuff out because I loose my train of thought. I also told him that the biggest mistake I made was to not take all of my tests at the disability resource center, and for trying to be like a normal student. I also told him that he was the one that had just proved that to me. This semester I take all of my tests at the drc just so that won't happen again. Wow, I sure do have ADD. Anyways, yea I'm with you and I know it can suck having someone not know anything about you. Just thought you might want to know we're all out here.
do you find it helpful.. coz i wud appreciate the extra help from my uni, im doing well on my course but extra assistance would alleviate some of my stress. You don't know if there is any extra financial aid for ADD students in the UK do you because i could really use it due to the financial difficulties i got myself into through excessive impulse spending. Didnt realise it was a symtom till recently that!
I don't know if the U.S.'s program is anything like the U.K.'s. . . But in the U.S. you don't get any extra financial aid, I think that would be discrimination. I'll tell you that all the help I get from my university has led me to great success. You can get up to twice as long at any test. Also, you take it at the disability resource center in a small confined room with no interruptions. Also, you can get a tape recorder if you wish and have all of your notes recorded and digitalized onto a computer so you can listen again if you need to. Another thing that I get to do is register for classes early. So I never have a problem getting into all of the classes I need to. Lastly, they provide support and counseling like no other. It has helped me out tremendously and I would advise you to seek out what your school has to offer you. Good luck.

You don't know if there is any extra financial aid for ADD students in the UK do you because i could really use it due to the financial difficulties i got myself into through excessive impulse spending. Didnt realise it was a symtom till recently that!I'm trying very hard to get help for ADHD, while working with a disability specialist at my university. I have run into a tremendous amount of problems.
First, the office is a disorganized mess. Students need help and they are not efficient or quick to give it nor are they understanding. I left a message for the specialist saying I had to make an appointment as soon as possible, that I was having trouble and she NEVER called me back. Two weeks later, I called back and only then was an appointment made.
Second, while ADHD is covered by a "learning disability specialist" and she sees many ADHD folks, she is not knowledged about the disorder at all. She keeps repeating "ADHD is not an excuse" like it's her personal mantra. When I apologized for being late and told her that when I'm really busy and I sometimes forget things even when they're important to me, she tells me ADHD is not an excuse for that. I told her it's not an excuse, it's an apology. She then asks if I use ADHD as an excuse in class. I said no. I always try my best in class and for her to make that kind of assumption is very ignorant and incompassionate. It's like she's siding with the teachers.
