CYMBALTA warning | ADHD Information

Share

I subscribe to the "Worst Pills/Good Pills" news reports and this is one of their most recent posting.  Please note that this is just a warning that (albeit a pretty strong one) is being posted on all packages now.  Should you be taking this drug, do not panic, but do contact your personal phsyician for further advice, if any.

DO NOT USE Duloxetine (CYMBALTA) for Major Depressive Disorder - Nothing Special and Possible Liver Toxicity
(January 2005)
AN FDA reviewer wrote: In the event that unconfounded cases of severe liver injury or acute liver failure related to duloxetine treatment are identified and submitted early in the postmarketing period, the division will use the threshold of three “clean” cases to initiate additional regulatory action that could range from a more prominent warning to the withdrawal of the drug product. Abruptly stopping duloxetine treatment can result in a withdrawal syndrome that consists of the following symptoms: dizziness; nausea; headache; a sensation of pricking, tingling, or creeping on the skin (paresthesia); vomiting; irritability; and nightmare. Discontinuation of duloxetine should only be done under medical supervision. Does anyone know how long the withdrawal syndrome lasts from discontinuing Cymbalta?  Specifially the paresthesias. Is that all of the article? I could not get the article to open because I am not a member of that particular site.  Is that all of it? Wow.  That is awful.  I am taking Cymbalta.

I stopped Cymbalt rather cold turkey in January when I ran out during a short period with no insurance.  I experienced no withdrawal symptoms.  Of course, you should be aware of all such warnings, as I have read on another site of others who had experienced them.  I've since gotten back on it after a negative reaction to Lexapro.

DixiePeep:  DO NOT PANIC - just voice your concerns to your doctor.   I have a neighbor that is still on the drug and her doctor tests her liver values every 3 months.  She has had no symptoms, but is choosing to go the route with caution, hence the blood testing.  Worst Pills/Good pills is a paid for subscription and that is probably why you cannot open it.  I tried the link above again and it opened for me, but that may be because I am a subscriber.  (My 33 year old daughter was on this drug and taken off it due to the possible adverse side-effects as she has had most of her pancreas removed and her liver works overtime - so I am prone to read anything about it.)  dixiepeep - normally these warnings only apply to a tiny, tiny, tiny percentage of people who may have a susceptibility toward these sort of things!  most meds have side-effects of some sort (even aspirin!) and i wouldn't worry unduly here...

i couldn't open the site either!

maybe consider discussing exactly what it means next time you visit your doctor if you want to know more - he should be able to fill you in.   and the fact that the article was written in Jan 2005 and the drug has not been withdrawn or anything else probably means that the liver damage has been found NOT to exist, or if it does only in a tiny, tiny percentage of which it is highly unlikely you are one!  take it up with your doctor, it is always good to know about these things, but i wouldn't worry unnecessarily!  every time i am given an anti-biotic or any sort of med reading the list of possible side-effects is enough to turn you white!  they have to put them there - but most people are absolutely fine and never have any of the side-effects listed!

good luck.

gee, now i wonder what they're testing that liver for every 3 months, perhaps possible signs of tumors?  maybe liver cancer?  they don't check it that often for nothing, that crap is potent....why do we accept this?

Because we trust the FDA and the drug companies too blindly.  One thing I have learned, through personal experience such as with my grand-daughter and the drug Straterra (of which I have posted our experiencein other threads).  We have been in the minority with her side effects, but one just never knows if they will be the one that the drug turns sour on.  One thing I have learned is to research every drug prescribed to the utmost of my ability and hound the doctor prescribing it with all of pros and cons and what ifs.  Many drugs are God sent, and so many would not be alive today or functioning as they do without them.  But I no longer trust the drug companies the way I once used to.
