He's on 1 pill at nite and 1/2 a pill in the morning. I called his doctor today, but of course he's not calling me back.
I'm against Ritilan, and I guess this is the only alterntive.

My son was treated for his agression with clonidine. For him this also increased his agressive behavior and he was very drowsy. He had terrible nightmares on it as well. We transitioned him to risperdal which has helped tremendously. Two whole weeks without incident! He doesn't act like a zombie during the day and is sleeping through the night as well. He did act a bit giddy at first but this has leveled out. For some the clonidine is the answer.
At least with risperdal those around him are no longer his 'target' .
Hi, I'm new to this board.
My son is currently on Clondine 0.1mg and it doesn't seem to be working. It seems like it's doing the opposite effect?
Michele
Is your son on any day time medication?my daughter is on concerta 54mg and clonidne 0.3 mg and she is not sleeping at night.they say that concerta has sideaffects of sleeplessness. The clonidine was only to address the aggression. It does not help the child focus more. Since it had the opposite effect on my son we changed to a different medication (risperdal which was a good switch for us). We may also re-introduce a medicine for the ADHD- we want to use as little medication as possible. I would consider changing doctors if yours is not calling you back. These are complex medications and need attentive doctors to help you make the right decisions. The doctor we use is a pediatrician that specializes in development disorders and ADHD. This helps to keep the number of doctors to a minimum. This is all very interesting. My son takes Concerta, but is having alot of trouble sleeping, and also those few hours at night, once the Concerta has worn off. His Dr suggested either Clonidine or Risperidal ??
It is sooooo hard to know what to do ??
The doctor finally called me back and his response was..."it doesn't make sense that it makes him more hyper and restless". When we finally were able to talk to him he told us to UP the nite dosage to 1 1/2 pills and decrease the morning pill to 1/4 pill. That doesn't make any sense. We've decided to keep him at the regular dosage he's on and call the Dr. monday and tell him we want him off and how we need to slowly wean him off.
We can't handle the WORSE hyperness during the day and the nite mares at nite. He too has also been wetting the bed.

My son also takes 0.1 mg and sometimes it's just not enough. He also takes Malatonin 1 mg. You can get it in a health food store, or GNC. Sometimes he takes 2 of these and it helps him to get to sleep. My son is 7 and has ADHD.Hello. I am new to this board. My daughter has been on meds for ADHD for 3 years now. She also has problems going to sleep at night. Her doctor suggested Clonidine for sleeping but not before informing me that there have been unexplained DEATHS associated with Clonidine. She had an EKG to make sure her heart was ok before putting her on it. I looked Clonidine up on the internet and chose not to use it. My understanding of Clonidine is it slows the heart. I chose to use Melatonin instead and did get good results from this. We have recently found my daughter to have issues with her heart and I am glad I decided not to use clonidine.
SWEET!
Sound's like he has a good Doc and a good mother. Keep up the good work.
Clonodine, as well as guanfacine are very effective drugs.
Hello,
My 3rd child who is 8 years old is on clonodine (.05), concerta and lexipro in the morning and takes risperdal at night. This is the ONLY combination that has worked for him. His anger has subsided and his severe Ups and Downs have gotten alot better (he has ADHD/Depression/Bi-Polar) and he isn't groggy or tired he actually has a quality of life now and has friends and school is MUCH MUCH better.
Hope it helps!
Clonidine is not a stimulant. It reduces adrenaline and stress by activating on the parasympathetic nervous system. It also acts as a neurotransmitter on alpha-2a receptors in the brain, which in clinical studies has shown to decrease hyperactivity, and to increases cognitive function as well as attention.
Guanafacine, which is similar to clonidine, does a better job of targeting the alpha-2 receptors, and therefore does a better job with decreasing ADD symptoms with a lot less side-effects. There have been more studies done with Guanafacine for ADD, and it has shown to be very effective in decreasing hyperactivity and increasing focus.
Guanafacine has been show to be about 25 times more effective in treating ADHD symptoms, 10 times less chance of lowering blood pressure, and a much less chance of causing fatigue and sedation.
I would ask your Dr. about Guanafacine as an alternative to clonodine.
Alternatives to Ritalin are Desimipramine and imipramine, both of which have shown to be very effective for ADHD in clinical studies.
