mixing words? | ADHD Information

i have to join in on  this thread cause i too have been  this way forever!!!  constantly forgetting a word in a sentence, that just stumps me and i cant go on till  i remember it then i will drift onto another topic about how bad i do that, then that onto something else then finally coming back to "oh yeah what was i saying"? lol.

also the hand thingy is wonderful  if we were/are italian then that would be acceptable.

fi have a little bit of everything that each one of you has posted!
Or, another problem I have is recalling a very basic word. "I left my shoes over there on the uhm, what's that brown fuzzy cloth thing on the floor (the carpet)" or I'll have to use my hands to try to describe it. I remember doing that with a gingerbread house- miming a house shape with my hands and saying 'you know, the one you put candy all over'.
Chocoholic...Wow! I've been doing that forever! The most, MOST basic words. It can be quite frustrating. And embarrassing, as you state, using your hands and trying to describe the word you mean. "Normal" people don't like you to finish their sentences or help them along, but I appreciate it when a friend helps me out when I can't find the word.

Are you also like that on meds? Since I just started on meds today, I don't know if I'll improve in that department. Sure hope so! Didn't get to find out today, since I never left my home or talk with anyone. Other than the "soliciting calls" where I just yelled "go away!"

I also do something my mother used to do. I'll use the "association" word I use to remember something. Like instead of saying "desert boots" which were popular in the 70s, I'd say "sand boots." Funny some of you say you dont do that on meds. I'm not on any meds yet so we'll see if that goes away then or not.
Hmmmm....I'm curious if anyone else does this. Like, I'll say "I'm going to go out and put gas in the hang glider and mow the lawn" or "I sure feel like having crayons for lunch" (when I mean pizza)

Its almost always the same number of syllables, with the emphasis on the same place syllable.

Sometimes, yes.

But even stranger (and fortunately rarely) my speech becomes like my handwriting - i.e. a sort of gibberish that has absolutely no relation to what is going on in my head.  Embarrassing when you are talking to a customer:

"Ah, yes sir - I see what the problem is yourmphh mmpghuumphmmwibble..."

 ?

Mark -

I don't mix words together like in your first situation but my speach tends to slur and I will mumble.   But when I am on my meds I don't.I slur and mumble too. Wow, meds can really fix that?

I have a tendency to trail off when I am talking to someone and something else takes my attention. I can be on the phone and suddenly someone in the room will start talking and I'll be like "So I was calling to check up on.... our order...  ummm.... the one I sent in the other day..... with the..... things on it........ where was I going?"

I'll mix up words too sometimes. "Honey, did you change the litter's cat yet?" And I always talk with my hands "you know... the thing!!!" *hands waving wildly*

Usually I have malaprops----

Like calling the unison "usion".  I tend to make up words :)

I forget words  I know...not a real lot but enough it fruistraers the hell out of me when it happens

I don't use the wrong word in sentences   so much as reversing the order so it is no longer a sentence

I make up new words..... I come with a special dictionary
usually they make sense as a hybrid of the proper word or just a new
word that takes some time to get or use a similliar word that has
completly different meaning then correct word.
When wired up I start a conversation in the middle... the first part was
carried out in silence in my head.... I get really strange looks
Then I am shy and tend to mumble so I dont grap much attention. I get
frustrated when I asked to repeat myself.... usual reply on my behalf is
"had to be there" (usually dont remember what I just said)
have to have a humor for own gorkynessHmmm I wonder if George Bush has adhd? He's the king of making up odd words...I mean "W", not George senior

Good topic

Yes retrieval of words has been difficult at times for me too. It can get funny at times too.  I enjoyed your discription of the carpet...I have given long discriptions of watches, pens, crock pots, and that place u go with the things that pull down and stuff comes out but not until u put in those round things on that thing on the side of the wall, but when u due they make sounds and then u can make your car look better (car wash). LOL true discription..

Hey! maybe we adult ADDers should come up with a game for the population to play. We give the ADD discription and the players have to guess what the word is we are looking for. Another thing I have noticed is that I sometimes begin conversations with prepositional phrases. I found myself writing and saying things like...to school she went...instead of saying"she went to school?Anyone else do this too?

Also directions...anyone still have problems with thier left and right?

Anyway, I enjoyed this post and the intersting way we ADDers have with words.

thre are probably more who do  it than dont it's  symptom. i reverse word order and often drop sylables or letters. I never knew that had a name tyYou mean your other right?

I make up words, too. I used the word "volumptuous" for many, many years. Finally, someone had the b*lls to tell me the word was "voluptuous." They burst my bubble. Anyway, I think my way sounds more like what the word means. lumpy

yes...I do that and people get frustrated with me.

What I am slowly realizng is there is a lot of ignorance in the general population re our ADD. It is if they think we do and say the things we do on purpose...when I try to educate people, they just don't want to know. Isn't it interesting that THEIR impatience and lack of understanding is somehow "OK..." but MY impatience and lack of understanding is viewed as a deficit....Stern Smile

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that has a hard time stringing words together into a coherent  sentence sometimes.  Does anyone else pause when they talk?  I'll be having a conversation with someone and I'll suddenly stop right in the middle of a sentence.  I have to take a few seconds to figure out what I'm saying before finishing the sentence.  It's like my mouth is moving to fast, so I have to pause and give my brain a chance to catch up.  It drives people crazy.

Eric, yes I'll pause, too. And not only does it drive people crazy, but they'll start talking about something else, or to someone else. They give up on us!
