THINGS THAT HELP US PAY ATTENTION | ADHD Information

i know that whenever i tell people i do these things so i can pay
attention better they look at me as if i just told them that gravity
causes things to fly upwards. but hey, my mind is wired
differently

so here are some things that used to drive my parents and ex
boyfriend crazy

-listening to music while studying
-watching dvd's while studying
-making things with my hands (be it drawing, beading, painting,
legos, etc)

the cross stitching thing is really interesting. and so many of
you do it!That is strange to me because I can't concentrate and anything can get my attetion. Funny how the brain works. this one thing i used to do in college, i would go out partying all
weekend and i;d always have one of those raver glolights in my
mouth. when it was spent, i just kept it in my mouth during
classes and played with it during tests and it totally kept me
calm.   i guess it is a good thing i never got a tongue ring...

I wasnt able to grow a Gotee until I was 22... I find that it is a great adhd fidget think tool.

Also I am totally not an artist when it comes to drawing, but I start to draw these strange semi-symetrical designs that always start with 2 or 3 tiny lines & i just slowly work my way out.

I do this alot when listening to sermons, when I have filled the page I write the main points of the sermon in the blank spots that I can find.

Wether or not I am retaining what I heard i have no clue. But it is truly a lifesaver for me... I feel bad if a preacher sees me though... I AM REALLY PAYING MORE ATTENTION THAN MOST PEOPLE IN THE ROOM I PROMISE!!

I think that's hyperness. I am the same way. I like to have  something else  happening  along with what I am doing. Eatting and doing something, tv on and doing something, doodling,  palying with something in my hands,  the leg shaking, etc..It's the extra "energy, ficus" or what ever  looking for an outlet.  The medication helped me a lot  with it.  I  can cook w/o watching TV at the same time now.

I have multi-tasking down to an art.

The radio is on at work, while I have a computer project and another project on my desk.

I always read and watch TV at the same time.

I can do just about any kind of craft or needlework there is.

If I am doing housework, I break it up into a circle of activies....fold laundry in front of the TV until a commercial, then get up and go clean the kitchen etc.

I also do artzy things with my hands for that same reason.  I haven't started cross stich yet...but have wanted to for many years...just haven't done it yet...LOL...anyway...I have to listen to the TV or radio to focus...this drowns out the dialogue in my head and gives me the ability to think about the task at hand...it the radio or tv is off then the silence is replaced by the my internal voice and I can read a whole book while planning what to do the next day....and I have no idea what the book was about....
