Mood Disorder | ADHD Information

My son takes 50 mg of Metadate CD. 30 mg 7:30 a.m. and 20 mg at 1:00 p.m. It only last I believe five hours for him.  The school he is in presently IDT (not school-they are evaluating him).  They say every day he has a rough time right after lunch. I say it's rebounding and his change in mood and disposition, is caused by the medicine and rebounding. They are leaning towards saying he has a mood disorder. say for i.e. bipolar, which I totally disagree with.  These drugs cause such unbelieveable changes when they where off, when he is rebounding.  Also on the weekend he is fine,  not moody and during the summer when he was not medicated HE HAD NO MOOD CHANGES AT ALL.  Has any other parent come up against the school saying there child has a mood disorder.  I don't want to have him given medicine for a mood disorder or bipolar, when he has ADHD.Rebound sounds like a reasonable explaination.  My son had really bad rebound when his Adderall XR wore off in the early evening.  Adding Strattera to the mix worked for us.  since your son is using a short acting for of ADHD med if he doesn't get his second dose before the first one has worn off rebound would make alot of sense.  If it is rebound I would suggest you give him the 2nd dose earlier like noon, to avoid that problem.

My son's counselor at school insisted my son didn't have adhd even though I know he does and a psychiatrist diagnosed him. She insists and argues with me every meeting that he is bi-polar, depressed and has a social anxiety disorder. I finally told her she was over stepping her bounds and that I didn't want her to work with my son anymore. The next time she saw him she wrote him up and he got suspended for a week. Now he's suspended again for swearing under his breath and their trying to expel him permanently. He's not allowed on school property even for basketball games. We finally got a lawyer and we're going to hearing because they wouldn't qualify him for spec. ed because he was to smart even though he's failing and out of school half the time with suspentions for doing typical adhd stuff and other stuff that kids say he does without proof of anyone seeing him do it or the teacher not knowing about it and it's happening right in class. I don't know what to do. My poor kid hates school and doesn't want to go back and I don't blame him. they're trying real hard to get rid of him without taking responsiblily for his education. He's on a 504 plan and that just isn't enough protection. He hasn't hurt anyone it's all related to attitude, fidgety stuff, swearing. Stuff like that. Don't get me wrong I hold him responsible for his actions but to expell permanently and not qualify him for spec. ed is just to much for me. does anyone have any advice? I HATE SCHOOL
