rainct...how long did you smoke before you quit?
Did you use the website you cited in your post?
And how many times did you try to quit before?

It's something I need to do, after smoking 40 years. And I'm smoking more than ever now, since I'm not working and up half the night. And just LOOK what it did to my face.

BTW, Congradulations!! Keep it up. GypsyWomyn38391.6731597222

I quit 78 days ago.

best thing I ever did for myself.

I quit the cigarettes about 18 years ago, on about the zillionth attempt - but I don't know what I did differently that time that worked.

I'm not a non-smoker though, I find it impossible to sit through a film on TV or listen to a piece of music without a healthy dose of nicotine (or unhealthy, if you prefer).  But I guess that makes sense, as nicotine increases levels of dopamine and nore .. nora ..  and the other, unpronouncable one.

I choose to smoke a pipe, and as I'm old I can get away with it.  The stronger the tobacco the better, too.

Mark -

This is the one thing I am desperate to quit, but I realize now (and I'm not making excuses for myself here) that I use smoking a lot to help me with my ADHD, with stress, socializing, pretty much everything. It's one of the few things I use for my "downtime" so to speak when I can just sit and collect my thoughts (or at least try haha!). And also the Dexedrine makes me want to smoke even more, it's crazy!

For anyone out there who has ADHD and has quit, what got you through, how did you do it, what worked best?

TIA!

And oh ya, for all those spammers out there that are spamming this board with their silly cures for smokers from some obscure place in Asia, please keep your spam to yourself!

I smoked for 20 years and quit 3 years ago.  I tried many times.  I think what got me through is telling myself over and over that the worst part is already over, and if I have one cigarette now I will have to go through that horrible experience again!  I used the gum, and it was good for me because if I was really feeling desparate I could chew furiously.  Of course that is not recommended and can make you quite nauseous and rather dizzy, but it relieves the need.  I switched slowly to non-nicotine gum, and still chew bubble gum part of the time.

Good luck.  Also, it feels really good to know that you accomplished something that was so difficult, so you get a confidence boost on top of the health benefits! I'll be cheering for you!

oh yeah, I have to completely give up the "down time" too.  I still don't take breaks, they seem pointless now.

boggled38392.4660532407I've been smoking maybe a year.
I can stop cold turkey if I'm not medicated.
But I'm alway medicated so as soon as I think about smoking I hyperfocus and can't get it out of my head.
Those are the best ones though. When you have to wait ALL day.

Hey, CC!

I know what you mean.  I've smoked since I was 18 and I'm 46 now.  But one thing me and mom did was take smoking outside.  Best thing we ever did.  I now smoke maybe 6 or 7 cigs a day, instead of nearly 2 packs a day.  As expensive as it is, the cost of burning up a little tobacco covered in paper wasn't worth it.  Eventually, I will quit because I am now learning to do everyday things without a cigarette in my hand and I have to stop everything I'm doing just to smoke.

Maybe you want to ask your doctor for a one month of supply of welbutrin. A lot of doctors will write welbutrin with maybe one refill so you take it for a month or two at the most. This works especially well with smokers that have ADHD or that are anxiety stricken. I quit smoking by chewing gum, but my mom has smoked for forty years and is on welbutrin now (who also has ADD). Now she's two weeks smoke free!

It's something I need to do, after smoking 40 years. And I'm smoking more than ever now, since I'm not working and up half the night. And just LOOK what it did to my face.    silly!!

BTW, Congradulations!! Keep it up.  thanks!!

I smoke about !0 daily... loads.. calms me down.

You guys are awesome! Thanks! I haven't tried the gum yet, just the patch, but I think I will use the gum this time around. My social worker that I see is also an addictions specialist, so I am going to talk to him about his on Friday as well. I see him every week, so just knowing that I'll have someone to help me is making me feel better.

I tried Wellbutrin a few years back and while it definitely took the urge away to smoke, Wellbutrin wasn't a good drug for me - I got a little weird on it (well, weirder than I normally am )

I'll keep you posted! Thanks for the tips and advice, definitely keep them coming, I appreciate it!

I quit 19 months ago.  I didn't use any nicotine supplements because it just prolongs the withdrawal.  What I did use is a blood pressure patch called Catapress.  My insurance wouldn't pay for aids to quit smoking, but they would pay for this.  I wore the patches for 4 weeks.  My doctor also gave me a prescription for about 20 valium.  I took these the first few days until I got through the nicotine withdrawal, which takes about 5 days.  Here is the link to an article that was very educational and helpful for me:

Good Luck!

Wellbutrin does help, I quit when I was on it years ago.

I actually just smoked what I vowed to be my last cig...yesterday I was driving in my car almost all day and smoking one after another - when I would go into a store and come out and get into my car it smelt disgusting...

So I detailed my car yesterday also lol...

My boyfriend whom I live with hates cigs - he hates that I come home smelling like smoke so I either make up an excuse like I was at a girlfriends house whom he knows smokes or I'll plan my every move around getting home an hour before he does so I can shower and put my clothes in the wash- pathetic hunh?

Since we are all supposively creatures of habit - I started my day off telling myself how disgusting it was and even though I could sit on my balcony, smoke one and write my to do list or sort my thoughts (especially when the adderall is really kicked in) right now I know that I am capable of atleast setting and fulfilling one goal so I will start with this one! However, next week I may be writing about my broken jaw from all the gum chewing!
