Hi and thank you in advance for your help.
I recently have been diagnosed with Adult ADD. I am taking 120 mg of Stratera and 10 mg of Dexedrine. I don't think the Stratera is doing anything for me and would like to stop it not only because of its ineffectiveness, but also because it is new and I don't feel it has been studied enough. Remember Viox and Celebrex were just pulled off the market even though they have been around longer.
Here is my problem. I did a no no. On my own I increased my dexedrine to 20 mg and then 30 mg where I have been using it for the last few days. This is the dosage where I feel very focused and comfortable on. I don't want to go beyond that dosage, I feel no euphoria and for the first time I feel what I guess normal people must feel like.
How do I ask my doctor to increase my dosage without him thinking I just want to get high or up? If I tell him I increased it on my own, I know that he will see red flags all over the place. Another patient of his did this, and he sent them to a treatment center for drug addiction.
Any suggestions? Should I just tell him that the 10 doesn't seem to be working as well? I'm afraid he will put me on increased dosages of Straterra, which is what I want to quit.
Thanks again
Australia sure has different rules than in U.S. or do other U.S. doctors letting you regulate the dosage. Was your doctor a psychiatrist or a primary care physician?
Hmm... my psych told me to adjust my dosage to what i felt comfortable with. im on dexamphetamine (i dont know if dexedrine has anything else in it, so im not sure if this will be the same)
I started off with 5mg per day. the first day i ever took it was an experience. :P since then, i have gone to 15mg, 20mg, and i am now on 25mg. i tried 30, but it seemed pointless and overkill, since 25 worked fine.
the psychs spend so much time telling us the drugs are harmless, so by rights you should find your own comfort level (to an extent... 400mg daily would be a worry ). if he tries to put you in rehab, sue his ass. the courts will believe anything over in the US.. :P
Hi - NewtoADD - do you mean you take 30mg for every dose, or is that for the whole day?
The very maximum you're supposed to take in a day is 60mg, so that's 12 of the 5mg tablets of dexadrine or dexamphetamine. Since they last about 3 hours, it's a matter of working out with your doctor how many you need to function and when to take them. If you need a 30mg dose then that will probably mean only 1 or 2 times a day.
Make sure you drink a lot of water!
I was just diagnosed and my first rx was for 20 mg adderall twice a day. I've already found that I need 40mg in am and 20mg in afternoon. I plan on telling my Dr at my next appointment that she needs to increase the dosage. I hope she doesn't have a problem with my honesty about what works best!
I was given the choice of a stimulant OR stratera. I didn't want the stratera...I read that it was really rough on your liver and not very effective.
Everything I've read about ADD meds says the dosage is different for everyone. I don't get pleasure from the meds. They make me sleep more and sometimes give me a headache. I'll take the sleep and headaches for a better life.
Tell your dr. that 10 mg. is not enough for an adult and that it wears off early during the day.
