Typically. in order to be "offically" diagnosed with ADD a person has to see a psychologist. Even if you go to a psychiatrist, they should send you to a psychologist who will run paper, computer, and assesment test on you to determin if you have ADD. Psychologists are experts in human behavior and can more acuratly diagnos ADD vs. a psychiatrist or Family Dr.

It makes sense that the psychologist would reccomend a drug, but it is up to an M.D. to determin what meds ar best for the person (have to take in account other things such as med history and other meds currently taking) This is why a psychologist cannot give meds, they are not experts in Medicine, so they cannot take into account your entire bilogical needs. Only a M.D. can do that.

Psychologist know what they are doing, They know more about mental behavior than an psychiatrist because they spent 5-6 years studying just that. A psychiatrist spent the same time learning medicine, and only learned how to SPECIALIZE in the medical treatment of mental disorders.

So no, it is not illegal for a psychologist to make a reccomendation. But it is up to the M.D. to determine what the best course of meds are.

Hi. I am no authority on the subject, but I feel sure it is "legal" per se'. I question the authenticity of any DX based on a computer test. A psychologist can not even prescribe meds, so it seems odd that they can make a recommendation to the GP who can write the scripts...Hi all,

My girlfriend (whom I have a wonderful relationship with) mentioned to me that she was taking Adderall.  I was rather surprised as I have never known her to exhibit symptoms remotely associated with Adult ADD.  I spoke with her at length regarding this diagnosis and was shocked to learn the following:

1. Girlfriend took her daughter to a child psychiatrist about 2 years ago, who diagnosed her daughter with ADHD.  In casual banter(the psychiatrist mentioned that she might also have ADD.

2. Girlfriend speaks with GP (based on information from child psychiatrist) who promptly says that she needs to seek help.

3. She seeks help from a psychologist (a few months ago) who administers a couple of tests including the ADD computer test...(can't remember what its called).

The paper test "revealed" that she seemed to have a high propensity for ADD.  She passed the computer test with flying colors!  Mr. Psychologist Ph.D recommends that she take Adderall!  Sends a  recommendation to her GP to prescribe Adderall for her.  GP prescribes the meds.

Psych also told her that people with ADD make poor decisions as far as relationships go.  She wants me to visit her psych with her!  I am an easy going guy with two masters degrees, one that just happens to be in healthcare administration.  The tests, prescriptions, and her wanting me to visit her "psychiatrist" raised red flags.  I told her to get a second opinion.  I have worked with patient safety research for several years and am aware of the dangerous consequenses of misdiagnoses and misadministration of drugs.

MY QUESTION:  Is it legal for a psychologist to recommend a drug regimen based on a dichotomous test result and have a GP fill this prescription?  I have asked her to have the psychologist fax her records to her.  A mutual friend of ours is a psychiatrist at a top 2 hospital in the country and I want him to take a look at her records (with her permission of course) and also with the knowledge that this is not a physician referral but a psychologists recommendation.

A concerned boyfriend (should I be concerned?)
