Adderrall XR to Regular Adderall | ADHD Information

Share

Hi.  I was wondering if there are any huge differences in going from Adderall XR to regular Adderall.  My son started seeing a psychiatrist a few weeks ago so that his medicine doseage could be regulated (found...actually). Anyway she put him on Strattera and changed his prescription of Adderall from Adderall XR to regular Adderall. Is there a rebound with going from one to the other? Any changes that I should expect in him? Why the difference? Curious as to why she would put him on the regular adderall.

Thanks.

Hi Valerie

Are you in South Carolina or southern California?

I'm from South Carolina myself.

Surely, someone here can help you with the Adderall meds.  My Brother took the Adderall briefly and it didn't work for him.  Maybe someone here has taken them both and can tell you the difference.

The main difference between the two is that Regular Adderall disolves quickly in your system so its effect only last between 3-5 hrs. The Adderall xr is time released, so it does not disolve all at once, it slowly releases into the body so you get a longer effect from it.

Hey SCMOM,

I'm from South Carolina too. I live in Summerville, not too far from Charleston. What about you?

Hi...First...I am not a doctor, qualified professional or expert on anything.  :)  I have taken both medications for ADHD.  I hated the regular Adderall because I felt jittery.  I also felt like I plummeted when it wore off.  I love the XR, but I've also been on it a while and I've noticed it's not working quite as well.  I'm a third grade teacher, with ADHD and often I get kids with ADHD, either diagnosed or suspected of having it.  I also have a sister who has it (she was diagnosed very young and no longer takes it, I was diagnosed as an adult).  Regardless of anything, talk with your child!  Ask him how he feels.  Have the teacher video tape him, so you can see him in school.  If he doesn't "like" how he feels, chances are he doesn't have the right med/dosage.  Also, the best thing for people with adhd is exercise.  Make sure your son is moving often....turn off the computer, playstation or tv and get him outside moving!
