Adderall causing high blood-pressure | ADHD Information

Share

Well first of all, do you normally have high bood pressure, or is that significantly different than normal? Also, keep in mind that diet, stress, and exercise play a large role in blood pressure. However, 150/108 is exremely high and, regardless of what is the causation, it needs to be taken care of.

I am personally on adderall and adderall xr and do not have high blood pressure--last time it was 108/6-.

Have you tried any other meds or perhaps xr? Perhaps your blood pressure would be less efffected by another med.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Help!

I started Adderall two days ago and have been trying to figure the correct doseing out.The Doc wanted me to take 10mg in the morning and 10mg in the afternoon. I started with 10mg in the morning and it didnt seem to do anything. So at noon I took 20mg and it seemed to help some but made me very moody.

The next day I tried 20mg in the morning and it did the same - made me moody, so at noon I tried 30mg and that seemed to really help. It completely evened me out. For the first time I felt normal!!

So today I took 30mg in the morning and 30mg in the afternoon and did wonderful. Felt so good and got some much accomplished......but......took my bloodpressure and it was 150/108. Now I dont know what to do...This medicine was actually working but now I might not be able to take it because of the high blood-pressure.

Does anyone have a similar problem? Has anyone figured how to treat this.

Thanks
dkearby38395.7785300926I have recently started taking Adderall and I do have high blood pressure which I control with meds. This has been a concern to me. The medication is absolutely wonderful for me but I have been closely monitoring my blood pressure. I have noticed throughout the day that it can range from 130/70 - 170/95. That really concerns me. Also my heart rate has also been much higher as well ranging from 80-95. This medication really helps my ADD symptoms and also stabilzes my emotions in a profound way. I am exploring how relaxation, exercise and other adjuncts might be able to stabilze the blood pressure. I don't want to stop using this medication but if my blood pressure continues to be a problem I will have no choice. I just hope I can find an alternative non-stimulant therapy that will work as well.Thanks. This is encouraging. I too have begun major lifestyle changes. The amazing thing about being on this medication is that I have stopped my uncontrollable cravings for food. I eat 3 very healthy meals. No snacks. No junk. I even have lost my desire to drink alcohol. I am beginnning an aggressive relaxation program which includes deep breathing. I am starting to exercise everyday. I am really determined to keep my blood pressure down. Being on this medication has really changed my life. Perhaps there are other non-stimulant meds that might work but the effect Adderall has had is so profound. I will just have to monitor myself carefully. All stimulants have the ability to cause high blood-pressure. Stimulants increase your body's heat level and increase the metabolism, which in turn can cause rapid heart beat and high blood-pressure. Not everyone will experience high-blood pressure with this med, but they do warn people with high blood-pressure to watch very carefully while on Adderall.

I dont typically have high blood-pressure, but I do when I am on the Adderall! It does makes sense that something that speeds up the metabolism will cause high blood-pressure; this was the main concern with ephedra based weight-products. Ephedra and Adderall are very similar; they both essentially stimulate the nervous system which can raise your blood-pressure.

Bottom line, watch you blood pressure. If you are going to take any medication, you need to monitor your blood-pressure on a regular basis. If your blood-pressure is consistantly high, you need to talk to your doctor about ways to lower it. high blood-pressure can cause heart diisease, stroke, and other health problems. This is why stimulants such as ephedra and adderall can be dangerous.

Monitor yourself and make sure you are not at risk. Stimulants can be wonderful for some people, but you don't want to have high blood-pressure. If you do, they might use medication to lower the blood-pressure!

I typically have blood pressure about 125/70, which is fairly normal. When I am on the Adderall my blood-pressure shoots up to 150/110, which can be quite dangerous. I am 22 and healthy, so this was a major concern for me. Now that I am off the Adderall, I have gone back down to my normal 120-125/70-75 range.
dkearby38411.8496180556high blood pressure is a contraindiction for stimulant medications. I  had higher BP  before  ritalin myself. I was Borderline  with linisopril at 140/90  135/95....in that range. When I started ritalin my Dr. really pushed a diet change on me for the ADHD.   Because i eat no processed foods, no longer fry anything,  eat no sugar and  simple starches and add no salt to anything  maybe once a week at the most my BP  dropped to 118/76  my last visit which was  in the middle of the day  while medicated for ADHD.  I also started a real vigorous exercise program after my Cardiologist cleared me.  I have lone Afib  and  was getting chest pains from anxiety attacks and frankly being all over the place with untreated  ADHD  just made them worse. After the stress testthe Cardiologist suggested I call my mental health  provider for a referral.  It's nice to not be like ricochet rabbit  anymore and in time  the couple friends  who  laugh and call me that  won't because it doesn't fit anymore

*Opps...in my last post, I meant affected, not "efffected" hehe

Yeah, adderall can cause a raise in blood pressure and a higher heart rate as well...Incorporating regular exercise and going by the DASH diet could help. Relaxation exercises and meditation are also great ideas. Best of luck to ya!

Bringing this one back alive...

My blood pressure is low - in the good way, but my heart rate does increase a lot on Adderall. Like sometimes around 90-100 in a sitting state. Is that of concern if my heart rate is high, but the blood pressure low? Or is it really just the blood pressure one needs to be concerned about?

Also, I have benn really good about exercising (3X a week!) since I started Adderall. I am motivated for work AND a workout! Yay! But admittedly I have been taking my first dose before the workout and the second when I get out of the shower. I don't really take it before the workout to help the workout, although I'm sure it does. However, I am concerned about my heartrate while exercising. I think I clocked it at around 150-160 during aerobic activity once (I sure felt like I was being overworked). Do I need to be concerned here? Is it really bad for me to be taking the medication before my workout?

Thanks.
