Do strict diets work for kids with addaddmum, My daughter, 10, ADD (no hyperactivity) also attends private school so I understand what you mean about no support. What I did was create a folder with everything I could find about ADHD. I included printouts of classroom help tips, explanations of ADHD behavior, strategies for helping with attention problems, etc. I also included a mini-biography of my daughter so that the teacher could see her as a person, not just as a problem. The feedback I've gotten from her teachers is positive. They say it helped them understand her a bit better. Also, I filled out papers to allow the teacher & my daughters therapist to communicate. Together, the 4 (my hubby included) of us are working on her organizational skills. As for diet & supplements, I have found that cutting sugar & most artificial colorings has helped. We don't use many convenience foods. I home cook our meals from scratch. I give Omega 3 (fish oil), vitamin E, Vitamin C, Mahnesium/calcium, grapeseed extract & a good multi vitamin. We do not medicate & I have seen a huge difference in her attention. There are still problems, mind you,but we are all happy with her progress. Oh, another thing you could do is ask the principal of your school if she/he could contact any other parents of ADHD kids there & see if they would be willing to talk to you. You might find there are more ADHD kids there than you think. And they might have some strategies you could use or some ideas. Anyway, just an idea, but it might help. Good luck to you & If theres anything else, I'll be happy to try my best to help you. Hi l am new to this forum and l have had no personal contact with other parents who have child/ren with add/hd. My son will be 8 in April and is currently being assessed for adhd by our local mental health team following a self referral. I have always suspected, but contributed his behaviour to other factors. Fortunately and unfortunately he attends a private school therefore with much struggle he has attained a good academic level however no support for other problems that are associated with adhd, leaving my son feeling depressed with low self esteem and demotivated. We are in the process of looking at other schools. We are about to embark on a diet and supplement programme and would like to hear from anyone who has tried this route without medication. No junk food does help. The only problem is when with other family who wouldn't follow.Plus how can they stay with other ever.Partys at school are also a problem all junk.We do cheat some though. rshn Teach healthy eating also.My son was diagnosed as borderline adhd by a top Dr. I don't want to mention names but supposedly he is one of the best and even has a column in the ADDitude Magazine. The borderline diagnosis lead me towards skeptcism. My son also attended a private school. The headmaster always said that "He is the nicest boy who is always getting into trouble" or that "He is in his own world." Since my son didn't fit the mainstream mold, he was considered a 'problem'. So I decided that would try alternatives to medicine. I tried the Feingold diet for a year. Very enlightening in terms of the hidden and not hidden items that are in packaged and processed foods. After a year, it was just to difficult b/c of partys etc... I would even send my son with the healthy alternative but once they get older, they WILL get junk and want it elsewhere. I think being on the Feingold diet set me up for a bit of failure because my son went whole hog for sodas and 'bad' foods when he got older. YES-the Feingold diet does work BUT it is very difficult to keep someone on it. TO this day we keep most food with chemicals out of our house. Next I tried every alternative dotor out there. I tried a homeopath. I tried another doctor who swore that my son did not have ADHD but had Leaky Gut Syndrome. So we used the natural pills recommended for that. Due to lack of results, we gave up on that theory 6 months later. Then we went to another alternative doctor who did the PN testing under the skin. Naturally the doctor said my son is allergic to EVERYTHING he ate so he took some recommended 'special' sublingual drops for about a year. I finally decided to try another doctor. My son was diagnosed again at age 13 with ADHD. He has been on Meds for exactly one year. This coupled with an amazing private school which deals specifally with kids with ADD has brought him to being a much better and happier student. Nothing short of a miracle!! My advice, eat well, eliminate chemicals from your diet but forget about wasting you time and money with the alternative quacks out there. I wasted thousands of dollars on something so simple just because I couldn't bear to give my son drugs. Hope this helps.
