Has Anyone Tried Yoga? | ADHD Information

Share

Tried yoga, enjoyed it (for a short time) then got bored (and forgot to go to classes) and went back to boxing, grappling and no holds barred stuff (aggression outlet you understand).  Tried karate in the past, but the repetitive kata practice and continual consistency required to succeed just frustrated me.  Yoga had the same feeling...need to make regular consistent practice to get those asanas right!

Let me correct myself and perhaps clarify what simi is talking about.

I use yoga in addition to an aerobic workout-like jogging for an hour or Pilates or the ellipitical.

Yoga is to wind down at the end of an active day, not subdue your hyperactivity. That's where martial arts or Tae Bo come in (Chocoholic). So, for those who already work out, try yoga in addition as a way of warm up, cool down or at the end of the day to relax, not exercise. Yoga alone probably wouldn't do it for most people.

Simi, I also have Power Yoga! It's awesome!

Any one tried Marshall Arts. Told great for adhd or adders.rshnCheeky, I have the Rodney Yee power yoga DVD by Gaiam.  It's great.

I know what you both mean about having a log of energy and thinking you can't relax.   I once took a yoga class at the gym and walked out after  a while.  It was so slow and boring.   The place where I go now, the instructors go from one position to the next almost right away.

But then last session I had an instructor  and EVERY time she tried to be funny would talk in Eeyore's voice from Winnie The Pooh.  That got old really quick...she was so annoying!

< =""> I love Tae-Bo. I've always thought I wouldn't have the patience for Yoga (nor the flexibility, for that matter). I'd still like to try it though.

I recommend Gaiam's AM and PM Yoga on DVD. I'm not sure what kind of yoga that is but I love it. It allows me to relax, yet focus. I think this kind of practice is good for ADDers because I personally couldn't get relaxed by meditating. My brain just won't sit still that long.

It's not a cure, however, as I still need medication and all.  BUT, many add'ers have problems with anxiety and to me, this is a great approach to relaxation.

Well, I tried both yoga and tai chi, and my hyperactivity must be that strong bc I thought I was going to to insane. Tae Bo, on the other hand...I am just curious if any of you tried or do yoga.  I have been doing it since April and it has helped me so much in my life.  Just think 90 minutes of basically not talking but focusing on the positions and meditative moves.  Sometimes there's joking during class but for the most part its great practice on quieting the mind and focusing on the moment your in.

Sometimes during shavasana (the 15 minute deep relaxation) at the end of class, my mind wanders off from the instruction on relaxing each individual muscle but I guess that's normal even with out ADD.

But the great thing is that you leave your problems outside the door and focus on making inner peace.

Also, when the teachers read a quote from some philosopher, it crosses all religions and cultures and applies to all of humanity.  Therefore noones beliefs are being pushed on anyone.

I wonder if any research has been done on the benefits of yoga for ADDers.

I did karate for awhile and it was great...I just lost interest in it and moved on to something else LOL

But while I was going it was fantastic, because you need to focus but at the same time you are always moving quickly and doing something a little bit different. I know my karate instructor (who is also one of my good friends) works a lot with ADHD kids and is known for her great technique at teaching kids with attention difficulties.

[QUOTE=scarygreengiant]Simi,
Does yoga help with your attention span or concentration. I could sure use help with that.

Yoga helps with stress and I just carry the benefits from the class thru the week.  It calms me. I'm not sure if yoga or intense exercise helps with focus but they helps my mood.

I'm able to focus better when I'm interested in something.  If I'm having a conversation and something bores me, my mind wanders.  It's a real problem.

I'm good at hiding it by focusing back in and pulling out a key point of the conversation to make it seem like I've been listening the whole time.

Eating food without any additives has helped me a great deal.

Once I eat junk, within a couple of minutes, I can't focus.
