I put my child on Ritalin 5 mgs. for ADD. She did well and so we went to the next higher dose and she developed a tic. She makes like a burping sound. We tried a different dosage and that did not help. she is still making a slight burping sound and also some facial movements. I took her to her pediatrician and she told me that Ritalin can unmask an underlying Tourett's Syndrome. Has anyone had any experience with this? She also said it could just be a nervous tic brought out by the medicine. I'm taking her to a Neurologist in a couple of weeks. I'm feeling so guilty. I thought I was helping her not bringing on something else for her to deal with. She is 7 and was having great difficulty with reading. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Kellie
Hi there. My son was diagnosed with TIC 2 years ago but was taking Guanfascine at first then we took him to see a doctor becuz i noticed the signs of ADHD in him and then he was diagnosed with that actaully 3 months ago. They put him on Strattera and it was not helping him at all. He makes the burping sound and constantly twinching his eyes. Also popping his fingers was a big issue. But I also have problems with him focusing in school, staying on task, completing his work, and forgetting so easily. Plus he has test anxiety. I tried that 3 months and today his doctor called and wants to switch his medication to EFFEXOR...which is a medication I have never heard of. So basically Im doing some research on this medication nad hoping I get some responds to it and let me get some ideas. But as far as reading he has the same problem plus writing. I just take some extra time with him and plus he has some extra classes that help him in school. Suggest having them to do testing on her at school and that wil help you see where she stands at. My son is 11 years old and we are just now seeing this.
my 13 year old daughter is taking 15 mg, of adderallxr daily. she was started on 20 mg. but it didn't work out. she began to play with her hair and within the first few weeks she had developed a bald spot on the top of her head about the size of a half dollar. she continues to play with her hair but we do see new regrowth within the balding area. she also is taking prozac and nuerotin. she never had an ekg before they started the adderall which is of concern. does anyone else have any problems with this?
My son is on Concerta, and I am wondering if he is getting some form of Tourette's syndrome from being on it. He has been making wierd noises in class and home, plus weird body movements at times. His pediatrician doesn't seem to be much help. He says its nothing and has kept him on the Concerta.
I have seen this transition in a person I am rather close with. He was very hyperactive as a child and as a result was highly medicated with Ritalin during its honeymoon period when they thought it could do no harm.
