addictive personallity @ stimulants | ADHD Information

THe pot is doing nothing good for his ADD. It is just making him  more spacey  and foggy  the next day. THat's why   we were called burnouts when I was a kid!  Pot  fries your short term memory....I needed all I had lol.   I speak from experience not ignorance.  I would be shocked if  a DR gave him stims if he  smoked pot  and if he is lieing to his Dr. he is pretty much Fvcked as far as getting any real help. I don't mean to be harsh but  the truth is  not real pretty. It's like a Diabetic   eatting  suger donuts all day and  not telling their DR  and then complaining he cant help them get their  GLucose levels right and his treatment isnt working

I would say I have a somewhat addictive personality just because I smoke and that is well, addicting :o)

However, I am on Dexedrine and I don't abuse it, nor do I even find myself wanting to abuse it. It also doesn't make me high like it would for non-ADHD'ers. It allows me to focus, organize my thoughts, my tasks, actually complete tasks, control impulsiveness etc etc.

The stimulant might actually help him, especially if it is regulated by his Dr. and you are watching for any signs of possible abuse. :o)

I sound a lot like your husband, I have my own small home based business that is based on commission, I put all the pressure on myself to be the breadwinner for our family <big mistake there>, we moved across the country, bought a new vehicle mainly due to my impulsiveness and that the "grass is always greener on the other side" type of mentality, I used to get so angry and frustrated, financially I got us into one massive mess etc etc.

That was all before I started my meds. I started my meds (Dexedrine 20mgs a day) about 2 weeks before we moved and all of a sudden I could think clearly and control the impulsiveness and impulsive decision making and I thought "Oh my god, what I have gotten us all into?" Needless to say, the medication has helped me tremendously and getting mine and my family's life back on track and our horrible finances under control again.

Let us know how your husband is doing and if you have any questions remember we're all here for you! :o)

I would certainly make the effort to talk to your doctor about your concerns.  I was on adderall and an antidepressant.  I found that combination brought out more impulsiveness in me.  I ended up changing the antidepressant and the impulsiveness went away.  Before the change in medication I think the possibility to abuse the adderall was definietly there even though I did not do that.  I honestly must say I was tempted.  I ended up lowering my dose of adderall and now with the new antidepressant I don't 'crash' like I did before.

I also disagree with the post that said adderall is not addictive.  The potential is there for abuse and that is why it is a schedule 2 drug.   Adderall is amphetimine which is know as 'speed'.   I am not saying that adderall does not ahve its place in treating ADD just that you should use caution and good judgement in deciding if this is right for you (or your family).

Hi Debbie, The ADD meds are really not addictive taken properly. Pot however is addictive. ADD is a brain problem, He does not have a 'pot' defeinicy. Pot forms hard areas in the brain and after a period of years remains there messing the brain up even more. It does not was out, is not water soluable. The right perscriptions from a medic who treats ADD could be a big help and even help him to calm down to sleep at night. Meditation helps calm, so does yoga, If he tends to be hyper at night maybe a night job would help. Good girl going to school. Give yourself a pat on the back. Someone in the family needs to keep a clear head. What I am finding on these boards is that the partners of adults with ADD are in need of help themselves or at least a lot of support. Life with them is "No day at the beach". Good Luck

sounds like the doctor needs to lower the dosage and not up it.

the pot will definitely not help. i am willing to bet the husband smokes pot throughout the day as I have been known to do.

i noticed with taking adderall xr that i don't get that high from the pot and it's good stuff.  basically i can't get stoned until night time. so now i have stopped smoking (sort of).

i would seriously reconsider any type of medicine if it made my wiener not work.

Hi, I'm new to the forum.  I've been married to a great man for 10 years and I always thought of him to have this wonderful high evergy and motivation for sucess.  It was what attracted me to him in the beginning.  Over the past few years his focus is very scattered and is effecting his business.  He has started his own small business and works by himself, strictly on commission so he has that pressure of going out and hunting for clients.  It's not going very well and it is frustrating him tremendously.  He started straterra at 25mg , very minimal a year ago and is not working to focus himself but has calmed the agitation and anger outbursts.  He upped it to 40 mg. a week ago and hass become very forgetful now and impotence is now a problem.  His therappist said to switch to a stimulant concerta and it will aleve much of the adhd symptoms.  We are very concerned about the addictive side effects because he has been self medicating with maryjuana at night to calm down to sleep and just "be".   Any thoughts on the dangers of the stimulant drug when he definetly has an addictive personallity and the impotence problem and the pot smoking with the meds.  We are at the end of the rope with finances and his overall self esteem when it comes to providing for his family and can't make it happen.  I'm helping by getting a part time job as I'm in school again to earn a college degree along with raising a 6 and 9 year old.  Any advice is appreciated.

Debbie
