Finally got tested | ADHD Information
No results yet. Turns out my local university clinic couldn't do
the testing, so I sucked it up and went to a professional psych.
He asked me a few questions, trying to get a feel for my life, then I
went and did testing with an assistant.
I had three tests, and I was being tested for ADD and SAD (social anxiety disorder).
The first test was a verbal listening skills test. I was read a
bunch of names of things, then asked to repeat as many as
possible. I did pretty poorly. This was repeated several
times until I figured out that there were categories to the
objects. After I determined that, I'd estimate I remembered about
50% of them. The test juimped around a little bit.
The second test was on a computer. Letters randomly flash at
intervals, and you have to hit the spacebar after each one, EXCEPT if
it's an X. Some of the intervals are very fast, some not, and
some are random. I did a good job in terms of reaction time
thanks to being a video game junkie but I noticed I was a bit trigger
happy with the X's. I reacted before I could even think. It
reminded me of playing a game of Counter-Strike and trying not to shoot
your teammates.
I wasn't sure what the point of that test was. Seems to me anyone
that plays video games for any amount of time is going to have
incredibly good reaction times.
The third test was a 300+ question form. A series of statements
was in a book and you rated how "truthful" the statement was pertaining
to you. This took a while to complete due to the sheer volume of
it. There were a number of questions on it that, I thought,
seemed to relate to a variety of mental conditions. The ones I
remember answering "no" to were questions about suicide, alcohol abuse,
illegal drug abuse, paranoia, anger / fits of rage, violence,
etc. But that fits, since I'm pretty mellow and just shy in
general. There also were a number of questions that seemed
bipolar disorder related. I did not feel there were many specifically pertaining to either ADD or SAD, though.
Anyway, haven't got the diagnosis/results yet, that isn't for another
two weeks, but if anyone was curious about the testing they do, there
ya go. The whole thing took about 3-4 hours. The doctor
visit was 0, the testing was 0 or so, we'll see what my insurance
company feels like helping out on, if anything.
RandomUser38408.556875Wow, sounds like you're just like me. I'm a recently self-diagnosed college senior. I'm also real mellow and relaxed, except for bouts of road rage, etc.
I am extremely poor and have no insurance, so I can't afford a professional diagnosis. Does anyone know (or have heard) of any kind of government assistance, or otherwise? I've just had a really crappy day with two difficult exams (though everyone else finished it 20 minutes before me) and am getting very fed-up with struggling so hard. I've come this far, so I can't just quit... but the harder I try to succeed, the harder it is to do so.
Was your doctor a specialist, or just a general psychiatrist? I'm trying to learn more about this, since I'm new to it. If I do have to end up plopping down money to help me out, I want it to be done right, and not have to worry about trying out different expensive meds.Congrats on taking that step.
It's been almost 4 weeks since I saw my family doc and I am STILL
waiting for my psych appointment. I wonder if I will ahve to go through
all these tests as well.
It's good to know that there are still doctors out there being thorough
about this. I read about a woman on another board who said she thought
she had ADD so her doctor simply gave her a presc. for Ritalin, no
questions asked.

He was a psychologist specializing in adult ADD.
I would check with your university to see if they offer a test through
the clinical psychology center. If they do, it will be very cheap
for you. Mine didn't. You might want to consider also
looking into health coverage, I think university students can get
reduced rates?
My parent's insurance covered me when I was in college... was good
insurance, too. I was too stubborn to see anyone about mental
health issues when I was younger though.

I've heard the Canadian medical system can be slow for some stuff at times :(

Oh yeah. There
is typically about a one year wait for elective surgery, and a minimum
of several months for tests such as MRIs or CAT scans (unless of course
its an emergency - then you are looking at a few weeks - LOL - just
kidding).
But hey, I can't complain. If I'm ever mangled in a car accident, or
come down with some horrible disease, I won't be stuck with thousands
of dollars in medical bills.
I don't get why so many of my fellow Americans feel the need to
drive such HUGE cars. It's really selfish considering how
many poor people die of hunger and curable diseases such as TB every
day. They should send the money they spend on SUVs and gas to tsunami
victims,
poor children in rural and urban America, poor children in other
countries, non-profit orgs, NGOs, and a ton of other causes. And I
wouldn't mind paying more taxes if it meant more security for me and
everyone else. Who wants to be stuck with huge debt if they get into a
car accident? An insane number of Americans do not have health
insurance. The majority of Americans who don't have health insurance
are actually WORKING full-time or part-time.
scarygreengiant38422.8398148148Man, no one loves the US these days. Well, we do have medicaid
which is a social program available to the poor, and he's a college
senior so he's almost done, and he stands a pretty good chance to start
doing well enough for himself. The US has tuition support as
well, particularily if you're not a white male. My college
education was actually pretty cheap.
I'm happy where I live. My house is only 162 sq meters, and my
car sucks, but in Montana most of the land is trees and forests, things
aren't built super-dense, and it's easy to drive a short way and find
yourself in the wilderness. Not so many places offer such a
thing. Montana itself is larger than many countries in Europe,
including Denmark I believe, and only has a population of 1 million.
Yes, I realize we Americans probably seem like a bunch of idiot
warmongers... but that's only 51% of us! :P There was
a time... oh, roughly 5 years ago, where you guys had a higher opinion
of us.
I am extremely poor and have no insurance, so I can't afford a professional diagnosis. Does anyone know (or have heard) of any kind of government assistance, or otherwise?
You can start moving out of that pathetic retro contry of yours, and immigrate to Denmark. Then you can study with economicaly support from the state. The education is free, and so is the health issues. The only positive part is that you will have to pay 40-50% in taxes when you are done, like every dane so you won't have to buy a excessivly big 4 wheel drive car, and a 400 square meters house. And no poor people
Tagg Man...You don't see us criticizing your country. ADHD/AD or "outbursts" isn't an excuse for your rude, impolite, insensitive, and unkind remarks.
If we ALL moved to Denmark, I can just HEAR you complaining about the growth of population in Denmark with all those foreigners from the US!
So please just go away!
BTW, I get my meds, dr appointments, anything I need, free from Medicaid. I know I'm more fortunate than some, but in the US there is a way to get what is needed, it just takes time finding the right channels.
i have been following this post for some time now, and i just didn't wanna say nothing, but I must.....
don't you think it's a little dangerous saying all those things on the net PLUS having your picture there so that people would know who you are if they saw you on the street??
you never know who might be reading your post, there are some crazy people out there.....
you need to be more careful......

GypsyWomyn, I'v deleted the message and said I was sorry because I know it was wrong of me. If you think that it is wrong to be rude, impolite, insensitive and make unkind remarks, i suggest you honor your thought by not beeing the same way towards me.
I really think I have ADHD, and I'm seeking help because of that... and I would have thought, that I atleast would have met some understanding from people that have experienced the symptoms of ADHD.
I AM sorry... hope you can somehow manage accepting that

Yes, I am taking steps to get medicated. I have a opinion, and I am not good at delivering it softly... and i am sorry for that... not about my opinion, but how I show it. Another thing is the opinion... that's mine, and I although the US haven't signed the geneva convention, they do have human rights... and opinion is one of them, and I will happily take that with me into my grave.
Now, be done with this, and move on.
Tagg Man, I guess you just got off to a rocky start. Okay, Martin, I will accept what you suggested and let it go. Can we all play nice, now?
An any discussion about politics....well, I'm sure there's a forum somewhere just for that subject. We have enough to ADHD stuff to discuss here.

A wise man, under duress, once said......
"cant we all just get along?
hahaha
I should keep away from politics on message boards. I can't control myself, and allot of people don't like me then
But hey, maybe the meds will help me... if I actually have ADHD

You americans seem like a bunch of blow offs
running around throwing your retarded, half thought through morality at
everyone... especially those who doesn't want it.
I hope your pathetic retro contry wake up soon, and stop running
around the world stuffing your precious freedom down everyones throwts,
and killing hundreds of thousinds by doing so. No wonder people get mad
at your country and want's to shove your so called freedom up your
asses.
The worst part is that allot of you people actually belive in your government...
Baaah, calling the french for cowards... they have more fallen soldiers on the field of battle than you will ever have...
Enough with that... you are right... 5 years ago you actually had a man with brains on the big chair.

sorry for the outburst
Hehe, funny... I'm quite sure i have ADHD... this IS a good example Mark Goode... again... I am very sorry for my outburst... I hope that, atleast you people have a tollerance for this
Wow... where did the drama come from? I won't go off into a political speech, but I don't think it's necessary to say that a LOT of Americans hate what their government has become... that happens with a corrupt electoral process and government - it's not the first time in history, either.
I think Canada is looking at a near future where they're going to be getting a lot of hard working Americans who deserve better.
Look, nationalities aside, we are all humans on this planet. Why don't we all grow up and quit dabbling in petty arguments about whose country is better.
The facts remain, we have human issues, not national issues.
Now.... what was the thread-starter saying about finally getting tested??
Wow... where did the drama come from?
It propably came from me not being medicated hehe :) I have a tendency to blow up... (sorry) it's quite messy hehe :)
Haley, I can't even start to imagine how it would feel if my own country had a leadership like yours. I fear that your people will reap what you sow in the feature, and that it will make you leadership an even bigger menace... but enough is enough... this is my last post in this thread. Sorry i ruined it RandomUser.
I love my country, I just don't like it very much right now. It is as if we preach a moral and ethical message everywhere to the worls but practice it nowhere in the world, not even to our own citizens who often continue to live in poverty, isolation and more. If I were a non American, I wouldn't like my government right now either...
It is very hard right now socially and poticially for those of us who are not in sync with the curretn (cough...cough) leadership of our country. We feel disenfranchised and often out of touch with a country that has become so meanspiritied and compassionless. Many of us KNOW other countries have lost respect for us as a nation...I can't blame them.
WHAT THE HELL DOES ALL OF THIS CRAP HAVE TO DO WITH AD/HD, ANYWAY?????????????????????????????????????
