My goodness, either we're all in a different time zone OR a lot of us don't work out of the home OR your employer doesn't mind you on the internet while at work!    I was on line 12 hours yesterday (very unusual) and I see a lot of you were there, too...well, a lot of the time. YES YES very addictive personality indeed... I indulge rather largely in

things. Very aware of it too....so I try to avoid the harmful substances.

Then there are things that you get lost in and they simply swallow you

that you get addicted to and get tear yourself away from. that reminds me I got to study. I've saying that since 8:00 am today. Can someone pull the computer plug for me please!!If nobody thinks ADHD/ADDers have addictive personalities....just look at how many hours we spend on this forum.    But I'm not complaining. There's worse things to be addicted to than sharing with others who understand one another. RIGHT! I've been much happier since I'm join this forum. GypsyWomyn38411.6693634259

"This board is very addictive, but at least it's something GOOD for us vs. illegal drugs or gambling, etc."

Well, now that depends on whether or not your addiction to this board is interfering with your job or not.

Aaaaahhhhh yes,,,, I do believe that ADHDers are of the addictive type. At least it is true for me! I have to really really watch my alcohol intake, and stay away from ciggeretts. I quit about 7 years ago. I find that I get addicted to things very quickly. I work out,,,, and find myself the sweatiest one in there (not attractive for a women), working my body to death. Same way with everything. If I could just focus on ONE thing at a time,,, I might actually get somewhere!

I just started concerta,,, 18mg per day, and have found that it is doing absolutly nothing so far.

Get away from the weed! You mind is out of balance because of the weed... and it could be why you have been diagnosed with the ADHD. People who smoke weed have allot of the same symptoms as ADD people. And that also means that you should stop smoking... it countereffects the medication. If you need to be calmed down, grab a beer.

Another note, addiction is many things. I think that ADHD people have a tendency to be addictet to adrenalin, released by parachuting, racing, climbing mountains... risky stuff. And propably being angry for the same reasons... you get a kick by blowing up at people... for some reason..

Jake I have noticed that I really enjoy smoking weed in the evenings beucase it really calms my thinking process down. I just started Ritlin and I only take that in the day at work, so its wore off when I get home. I don't do it to feel "high" at all, it just really relaxes all the thoughts running through my head.bcgirl...I don't know if that's self-medicating, but I bet it helps you get to sleep!

Trail Seeker...from what I've read in other posts, seems that a higher dosage than 18mg seems to be more likely to help any. Or if you're really small, like under 110lbs. Yeah, right.      But I suppose the drs really want to see how it goes with adults, since this is pretty new to all of THEM, medicating adults for ADHD.

Keep us posted...perhaps under the thread I started "Anyone w/positive results on Concerta" or something like that. I really am curious how those on Concerta are doing, positive or negative.

Thanks!I love my caffeine. Ever since I was 12 years old I've been drinking Diet Pepsi like a fish. I used to get cranky as hell if we ran out and my parents didn't buy me more.

Today I have a great fondness for Diet Vanilla Coke. Preferably with a shot of Screech (Newfie Rum). I have one or two every evening, much like many people have a glass of wine after dinner. I never get drunk.

I don't know if that counts as self-medicating or not.

Yes GypsyWomyn, i feel relaxed when i get my coffee... and i drink beer severel times a day... in periods... Just so i get relaxed... not drunk. I stop for months to make sure i don't get addicted. I havent had a beer for 2-3 weeks now... hehe :)

I hope my psychiatrist can help me, so I can get some real medication.

ok so I am a dingbat....I was thinking of illegal addictions.......Before Meds I could drink coke all day and add coffee in between....now I dont' really want it unless I am having a hard time coming down from my meds...If I have caffiene around the time I take them....It throws me off...and I feel weird.I would say generally no, i do not have an addictive personality......but I sure am obsessed lately with checking in with this board.....I think it is something I have been needing all of my life.....I just didn't know it.

I'm addicted to coffee, sugar/carbonhydrates, insomnia, dark, internet and propably allot more that i do not realize.... but fortunately no drugs, smokes or alcohol...

I'm on coffe cup number 17 this day... (20:27)

Tagg Man, sounds like you are self-medicating....something I've done for years for ADHD, but not realizing it. There's some good previous threads on caffeine and ADHD/ADD...might want to check em out.

This board is very addictive, but at least it's something GOOD for us vs. illegal drugs or gambling, etc.

I don't drink, but do smoke tobacco. I've cut down to one or two cups of java since I began ADHD meds.Psychological addictions are some of the worst...gambling is one example. Doesn't have to be something we injest.

You know, Dopamine is commonly associated with the 'pleasure system' of the brain, providing feelings of enjoyment and reinforcement to motivate us to do, or continue doing, certain activities. When we do stuff wich makes us relaxed or something like that we feel enjoyment because the hypothalamus produce Dopamine.... and you know what... that is self-medication...

We are addictive of nature, because we have to little dopamine in our system... and that is why we should have Ritalin/Concerta or other stimulants wich heighten the production of those signaling hormones.
