for people who are scared of stimulants | ADHD Information

I think the biggest reason I worry about giving my son dex is because I am unsure of his diagnosis.  And have an understanding that stimulants given to a child with bi-polar can aggravate the condition.

My suspicion is that he has bi-polar or schizophrenia - as is our family history for the males in my family.

At 7 however he cannot be diagnosed.

that might be a good indication that you need to go see your doctor.

Daven38412.7829976852There are many POTENTIAL risk involved with stimulants as with ANY medication. Please don't be scared off from them just because of the horror stories you have heard. There are far more success stories than failures.

Stimulants have potential side-effects that can be dangerous, but there is a way to prevent the situation from becoming life-threatening:

First - The main thing that scares people about stimulants is the chance of heart problems. Heart problmes from stimulant use is caused mainy by prolonged high blood-pressure. Because stimulants "stimulate" your nervous system and metabolism, they can raise your blood-pressure. High blood pressure is VERY dangerous if not treated. The best way to protect yourself from heart problems due to stimulant use is to take your blood-pressure on a DAILY basis.

As long as you get regualr check-ups from an MD, and they dont see any problems, you should be ok. The people who have complications are the ones who dont monitor their health. Anything can cause an adverse side-effect and sometimes you won't know until it is too late; get a chek up regularly!!!!!!!

Stimulants can change person's with ADD/HD lives around. You won't know until you try. Don't be scared! As long as you understand the potential risks and get regualr check ups, you will be fine!
