My doctor and I are in the process of adjusting my daily dosage of Adderall XR. My perscription drug benefit does not allow for more than one perscription for 2 pills a day in a thirty day period.
The dose is adjusted or changed depending on the reaction within a weeks time. Results of stimulant medication should be seen within the first hour of taking the medication and if extreme side effects are seen, it is adjusted or changed. At least 3 differnt medications for ADHD are tried if the prior arent right for that particular person. It is all very individual. Although stimulant medication is a class II medication, if taken as precribed by physician, addiction doesnt occur. Hope this helpsWhen you start seeing a psychiatrist and they put you on a stimulant, how can they adjust the dosage since it is a class II med? If you don't get the relief you need with what they start you on, Do you have to wait 30 days until your original script is up? I don't get it?When I was first trying meds out, my dr. assigned me a low mg pill and told me to adjust my dose by x mg until I found a dose that fit.....once it was found, I got my "final" prescription, but it continued to change slightly....So, for instance, my dr. gave me a prescription for 10mg adderall xr and first day, I started with one pill...if it was too much, I was to take half a pill....if it wasn't enough, I was to up it how much ever was deemed necessary (within reason)
Dunno if that helps at all with your question, but I hope it does

My son's ritalin dosage has been chaged- we went from 10 to 20mg and we just got a new script; we didn't have to wait until the old one ran out. we are in the process and asking to have his dosage decreased at this time. i don't think you have to wait until the old script runs out, though. your doctor can just write a new one. toopooka wrote:
hope i don't seem too dumb...:)
The only dumb question is one that isnt asked :) I think if the dose is changed its considered a new persciption but dont quote me on this. Its been years since my son was diagnosed so I'm a bit burnt out lol However , don't quote me on this and the best way to find out is to call your local pharmacist or I'm sure there are many posters here that are in the process of changing doses so they would also know. Its not uncommon for the patient to have several dosage adjustments or med changes while going through a trial of meds. Asking questions educates people whereas assuming to know with no certifiable knoweldge or experience inhibits educational growth so ask away :))
