it referenes that  children given anti depressant stimulants are 3 times as likely to use cocaine

It doesnt footnote.....sounds like scientology  tinfoil hat crap  to me.

It has so many outright lies   and I need to leave work now but...when I get home from school tongiht if I feel up to it  I will post links to refute the BS..... it's always best to mix truth with lies...notice the links are  for laws, songs, etc not  a single one to any study  supporting the  statements hey make about medication and addiction

ok, I re reqad it it isnt horrid  but    the stuff on  addiction is skewed  i will post some  info later or tommorow  to correct it.

O>K> as i replied before, i didn't post it for the article, but for the quick links inside the article, for mainly people like me who lack the knowledge to find all of the laws and resources in the links that this article has. I've read several postings where people are asking about the different laws, where to find various sites ect.... if you read the article enough to know what it says, then i am sure you saw the links. i myself have children on stimulants, however every-one is entitled to say or think what they want, and this seems to be a good conversation starter.

the truth about aspergers and adhd is true. our Dr. told us this a posability.

yeah, it did have some good information in it. It had some bad info too. As someone who takes meds and is an adult I can tell you I  am never going to cognitive therapy/think my way out of ADHD.  THe medicine has allowed me to  make a lot of changes  well beyond the intial benefit of the medicine  through new habits I have actually  been able to make and maintain.

Dr. David Smith reported on study of adolescent substance abusers that seemed to indicate the appropriate medication for severe ADD in adolescents prevents the abuse of other substances for the purpose of medicating ADD symptomshttp://www.tgorski.com/Mental%20Health/ADD%20&%2 0ADHD%20Medication%20Options.htm

that would be on teens who already had a drug problem

As parents, we want our children to navigate through the teen years without abusing alcohol or drugs. Many are concerned that children with ADHD who take stimulant medications such as Ritalin might be predisposed to drug abuse later. A study published in the August 1999 online edition of Pediatrics turned this concern upside down. Children with ADHD who were not treated with stimulants such as Ritalin were three times more likely to abuse alcohol and other drugs as teenagers than similar children who had been treated

knowledge is power!

I did not read this whole article. I just started skimming. One thing I noticed is the 'magic drug' part; about how it doesn't make sense that a drug could be 'calming' for one but stimulating for another.

As it was explained to me by a professional (which I am not), people's brains produce all sorts of chemicals that do all sorts of things. If you have adhd (or an anxiety disorder or autism, etc.), then your brain is not producing enough of a chemical to reach the needed 'threshold' that allows you to maintain focus/keep your body still, whatever. The stimulant in this case gives you more of the chemical so you reach the threshold and can then function. The function of the stimulant is to get the chemicals in the brain UP to the normal level. Now your body can focus/keep still.

The reason it has the opposite affect on others is their brain already produces enough of the chemical to reach the 'threshold.' When you add even more by taking the stimulant or other drug, the chemicals go that much farther above the threshold. Your body could already focus/keep still, but now you're in over-drive.

An analogy:

Let's say you want to slide smoothly down a slide. 'Normal' people can climb all the way to the top, which allows them to slide smoothly down. An 'adhd person can only get part way up the ladder. For this readon they can never slide down. They need the 'boost' to get to the top of the slide. If you're 'normal' and you're already at the top, and then someone boosts you even higher, just think of the 'ride' you will get down the slide.

As I said I am not a professional in this area. But I have studied a bit about how your brain works. For whatever it's worth to you, this made sense to me.I second that Bobel....finally someone else who sees these statistics as alarming. I posted under this post in the parents of children with ADHD. The studies are not supporting the theories. Proof in my life, proof in accurate studies = proof enough for me to be better educated! Knowledge is very important. Keep researching and refuting propaganda.
