g girl
when the tics first developed he was taking regular adderall, he had been on it for about 3 months when i first became worried about them. It was probably sooner that he developed the tics but they started as throat clearing and blinking so i didnt notice right away. so we stopped the adderall and tried concerta which didnt work at all for the impulsiveness then went to straterra but that was like taking nothing (my sons neurologist swears straterra works for some things but ADHD isnt one of them), and the tics stopped with the different medication, he was seeing a psychologist at the time, and she said it was tourettes syndrome. Since then he has started seeing a pediatric neurologist. She told me it was not tourettes but tics brought on by the adderall, she said "that is common with adderall" going by what her patients tell her not the medical journals (good doctors listen to their patients). The tics were not as bad with the adderall XR but they were still there (face twitching, blinking, mild throat clearing), so she prescribed prozac and the tics stopped (prozac also stopped the coming off the meds mood swings too).
Hope this helped, I was recently diagnosed with adult ADD and having dealt with this for years with my son I am a little more secure with taking Adderall XR myself.
By the way just out of curiosity did anyone else lose 5 pounds the first day you took Adderall XR, I'm sure its just water weight but it had me a little worried.
GeeGee~
Was your son taking Adderall xr when they developed? And how soon after starting the meds did the tics start? I actually stopped taking it for a week, they diminished but never completely stopped, and after visiting another Dr. and asking him about them, he thought they were from something else. All the psychologists say it is not from the Adderall. I'm seeing my MD in an hour and we'll see what she says about them.
I've been hearing they're from stress, and that's likely to happen w/ the adderall and tension. And lord knows I'm under stress these past two weeks with my husband considering us splitting up now. Not to get into it, but he has ADD too and is not diagnosed, treated, or admitting he needs help. He thinks, "okay, now you know you have it, you're getting treated, move on.......as if it will fade away....HELLO...it will NEVER fade away!" Pretty typical behavior, huh? His personality and entire life evolves around ADD. It is so frustrating for me! He thinks he's got it bad, I have it worse because he's in denial that he has any problems (ignoring what I go thru w/him).
Okay ~ off on a typical ADD tangent! So, I went back to taking the adderall two days ago just to try to maintain some sanity as opposed to none except that with caffine. I have this appt. in an hour and am going to try to convince my Dr. to let me try Concerta. She's all about the adderall from what she said. And we know MD's are not as "up" on the ADD meds not dealing with many ADDers like the psych docs. Don't we? That's my take so far. We'll see if she LETS me try a new one. I just want to see improvement and not have tics! Though I know side effects are inevitable, I'm learning to live w/the tic as opposed to not taking any meds at all. I just feared something like what happened to your son happening, the diagnosis of Tourettes or something. Would it make it come out sooner, I mean is the Tourettes something that can stay dormant forever and take a tailspin if affected by stimulants? Any info on that would be appreciated if anyone has any. I'll ask Doc that too, but don't anticipate much if there's no experience there. I guess I'll have to delve into that subject for investigation when I get home. Thanks for your response
HI my son has been off and on adderall for 4 years ( we have tried other medications but always came back to adderall) he is 9 now and when on the adderall he developed fine motor tics, the doctor diagnosed him with tourettes syndrome but when he stopped taking the adderall they stopped. Since the adderall worked so well for hime he prescibed prozac and adderall and the tics stopped ( he also has asperger's syndrome but the doctor was sure the adderall caused the tics)
Hope this helped you!
Hi there,
is anyone suffering from twitches?? last day or so i cannot stop twitching, its almost like an itch, i cannot sit still anyone have any idea's??? Could it be medication>
HI MOMMA JO!!
SORRY HAVEN'T A CLUE, NERVES MAYBE? POSSIBLY FROM STRESS?!@ NO COULDN'T BE, WE DON'T GET STRESSED. JUST A SUGGESTION, HAVE A NICE DAY!!!
SANDRA
Hey Sandra!
well thanks for your info
it was really helpful now i feel a lot better, lol.
it is driving me crazy, hope someone can shine a light on it!
I REALLY DID USED TO TWICH, WHEN I WAS ON PREDNIZONE, DOCTOR SAID NERVES
You should mention which medication you have been on.
Mamma Jo...the dose of the mediication may have to be adjusted. You may be experiencing transient tics (not to be confused with tourettes syndrome). If it is the medication, the dose will probably be lowered but call your doctor as soon as you can. Transient tics should go away once the medication is adjusted to the right dose. Good luck.
I WAS TAKING PREDNIZONE, FOR HEELING, ONLY A COUPLE WEEKS, ALTHOUGH I'M SURE I HAVE ADHD LIKE MY SON (CUZ I RELATE TOO WELL WITH WHAT HE'S GOING THROUGH, FLASHBACKS OF CHILDHOOD) AND I KNOW I GET DEPRESSED VERY SEVERLY, TO WHERE I WON'T GET OUT OF BED FOR DAYS EXCEPT TO FEED THE KIDS ECT.... AND IT TAKES EVERY OUNCE OF WILL POWER I HAVE TO DO THAT. I JUST CAN'T SEEM TO SEE A DOCTOR. I HATE THEM. ONLY WENT FOR PREGNANCY CUZ ITS A LAW. SO I TAKE OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATIONS A GOOD STRESS RELIEVER FOR ME HAS BEEN RELECORE. ITS SUPPOSED TO HELP YOU LOOSE WEIGHT, NOT GOOD FOR THAT. BUT THE PREDNIZONE IS A STERIOD, I ITCHED, AND TWICHED ALL OVER. DROVE ME NUTS, DOCTOR TOLDME STRESS. COULD ALSO BE A REACTION YOUR MEDICINE IS HAVING TO SOMETHING YOU ATE OR DRANK? ANYTHING NEW IN YOUR DIET? JUST FOR THOUGHT.100 mg B1(Thiamine) or more does work wife do this daily. Tastes gross though.I noticed when I lie down with my son or he sits on my lap he gets them, usually when his meds are wearing off. Mostly in his legs. Could be withdrawal symptoms?
For a year or so I have twitches in my neck. I'm not sure if what it's from. The thought that it could be the meds never crossed my mind I will have to look into it!
Tamara
YES! They are driving me crazy, they started 4 days ago and that's why I'm on this site! I've been taking Adderall xr (25) for a month, and the psychologist tried telling me they weren't from the meds. Yeah, right. Like my eye has gone into these spasms ever before that I felt I had to bring it up now, when I just so happen to be taking this medication that affects my central nervous system! I decided today, after that, I am switching doctors! I am offended he didn't take me seriously and is blowing off my concern with health risks of increasing my dosage. Anyone agree? Or do you all think I should just deal with these twitches and suck it up. Oh, did I mention the meds don't do a darn thing for me yet? Any suggestions?I absolutely agree g girl and I'm glad your switching doctors. The medication needs to be adjusted or changed as that IS a side effect and one you shouldnt have when the right dose and med is found and when the right med and right dose is acheived, positive results should been seen within 30 to 60 minutes with minimal side effects.
