Ritalin, I need some fed back | ADHD Information

I also posted this in another forum, but more people seem to answer in this section for adults.

Well I need some feed back!

I have notice on these forums that many of u have stated amazing results right away when taking medications.  I.E.  "it was amazing"  "I noticed immediatly the difference"   "I have my life back"  etc......

My doctor told me if Dexedrine didnt work that he wud try me on Ritalin,   I have gone from 10,20 now 30mg,   and all I found was, 1. felt calmer   2. slight loss of appetite   3.  could remember phn #'s    the last one was big for me as i cannot remember #'s and tend to switch them around. But nothing else that I have noticed.

But none of them gave me the results that some of you state like "amazing difference"

Am I expecting an explosion and to be this super intelligant person???? I dont know but I deffinatly dont expericene what most of u do when on correct medication.

Any feed back would be great!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, sweet sweet Ritalin.

So, get yourself some dang Ritalin. Won't your doc let you try it?

I'm not familiar with what you are taking, but who knows, it could be the best for you. Ritalin is the boss. For me. Results may vary. I've found that either 20 or 30 mg. daily works well for me I take the time-released stuff and I think I can even get more just by asking but I don't want it, not yet. been not taking it on Saturday and Sunday and still feel better - like thought patterns and behaviors have been taught to me - or maybe the damn stuff is still coursing through my veins, I dunna.

TR!

so R u saying that the right medication would have the "amazing results"s   some people say it is gradual and give it time, but then others say it is immediatly, so u can see why I am confused !!!

all I want is to find the response that i need which is to FOCUS  like everyone is saying they do on the right medication

Hi there,

Here in Canada Adderall is banned,  the two most popular drugs are Dexedrine and Ritalin.

Maybe if as u said Ritalin helps better with motivation that might be better for me.

I have noticed small things with dexedrine, but I need to focus more so may ritalin may be better, I alway thought that Ritalin as an anphetamen so what is the difference can anyone tell me?

So far I seem to get the response from people that i should be trying to change myself more than expecting the meds to do it.  Maybe I came across wrong.

I am in school as i got fired from my job, so i am trying to find something that will help me focus better.  Dexedrine doesnt seem to quite do that, even though there are small things i notice, but i still forget things even when i write them down.   Should i start taking 40mg????

Not sure what the answer is.

Starting treating ADHD  with Dex is like  starting to treat a hangnail with a scalpel and stitches imo( but hey wtf do I know I am someone with ADHD and strong opinions...how ooc). For the life of me I can't see why a DR. would start you out on the most powerful medication for ADHD  rather  than on Ritalin. Some people dont respond to it others, respond better to it than adderal or dex...seems to me the way to go is start with the least powerful drug and work up if that doesn't work rather than starting with ampetimines and  working back to weaker stims...Maybe ritalin wont work, maybe adderal  will work better than ritalin or dex but, it seems  asinine to start you on the medication witth the highest risk of side effects  and the most physical effects to the body  first?!?....I'd go looking for a new  DR or ask why. MAybe there is something ion yopur medical hiostory that led him there...... IMO some DRs read to many shiney phamphlets given them by   pharma reps and not enough of PDRs and medical journals. It's a bad situation when advertising agents with a vested interest are the source of information. It's how we got a drug vioox meant for 1 in 20  who needced NSAIDs given to so many  who diodnt need it....grr grr bark bark... God, I can be so judgemental

One thing  I have read  Ritalin does do the amphetines dont do  is help with "motivation" in a lot of cases.   Having the motivation to do mundane chores  was one  of the greatest  benefits of medication for me. Before doing the dishes  was like having my fingernails torn out

God, I can tell when i am fired up...grammer and spelling go right out the window... Are other people like me..quick to jump on a soapbox  and quick to jump off?  It  can be great in work done by committee because  with passion come  that hypeerfocus thing that  makes me very convincing  because i generally  answer  challanges preemptively in my presentation... but it leaves  em tired when I wind up. Anyone else  like that. I dont mena so much on a message board  since it's tough to really get worked up or keyed up in print but in public situations?

I just started taking it and found it to be hit or miss depending on factors like, if I ate, time of day, mood when I take it, etc. I also don't think my 10mg dose of Ritlin might be enough.

When it works here are the possitive effect:

-Increased drive to start and complete tasks I normally avoid at work and home

-Gives me a more enthusiastic attitude

-Finding it much easier to sit down and have a conversation with someone because I can listen to them without getting bored 5-10 minutes into the conversation and having my mind start wondering.

-Much cleaner more orgaznized thinking.

Negative Effects:

-only last a few hours

-loss of appitite

-very thirsty

ritalin is classified as a stimulant. Caffeine is a stimulant, nicotine is a stimulant, ephedra is a stimulant of them all ephedras  probably the strongest  and  nicotine the  weakest. Ritalin is a powerful stim  but  I used to get edgier  drinking double starbucks expressos  and got no benefit. 2 double expressos  could give me scalp  crawl, motor mouth, and my the hyper activity just got worse.  the ritalin does effect appetite  more than coffee does  but it is  very therapuetic for my ADHD..Muh?? sit still unheard of  before medication...it's nice not to spend so much time runnning in physical and mental circles. I am still amazed I sit in place  only shifting for comfort rather than swimming in a chair  shaking one or both legs, tapping a pencil, doodling. playing with something in minds  to focus some attention and energy on. A lot of adults out grow the H in ADHD I never did  i looked like a freaking spaz...42  and acting like  a second grader who needed to go the bathroom anytime I had to sit still. It's  a real nice thing slowing down or having the part of my brain that couldnt keep up catch up however it works.  Hopefully, they will have a drug other than stratterrra or stims that works  well on adhd  by the time I hit my 50s.  Stims are  not horrid drugs but  they are not vitamin pills and as I age I'd rather not have to choose the medication or the symptoms. I would not plan on taking dex for years. Now, thats my own substance abuse history that  gives me that perspective  so wouldnt be true for others.

Dexedrine is an amphetimine salt...  they both stimulate but amphetimines  are stronger and longer lasting. You might want to do some research on what if any nutrients  the dex  depletes. I seem to remeber Amphetimes  were harder on the system i that manner  but cant place the source.

I drink a LOT of water on ritalin. It does effect appettite. I am not sure if it's more or less than DEX though since DEX was originally a diet  aid. I believe but am not sure  DEX is part of the formulation of ADDERAL and I thought it was the most powerful  part but, I think lots of wrong stuff and dont have time to verify atm.   The shorter acting ritalin works out great for me I take it at 530, 11  and 3 or 5 depending whether I have class at night.   I fall right to sleep  and dont have  any kind of crash becuase it is flushed when it's bedtime. The days I wait  till 500  because of class I go home and veg an hr   before class  and eat anyway so it doesnt matter if I feel like sluggo  for an hr..its not a bad feeling just a lazy one. I started  taking it 10 mg twice a day  and the middle of the day sucked  but   when I went from 10 twice to ten 3 times a day  it  worked out real well for me. I sometimes  eat when I am not hungry because I look at   the clock and know I really need  the food. During the day I get hungry around 11  and 4 or 8  depending on  school and if I just ate then  my blood sugar would be all over the place...and that's not good for the canoodle. Ritalin  is a powerful appetite suppresent in my case but, I really think dex is probably stronger or ritalin would of been the original 70s diet   pill  not DEX. I  treally focus on eatting right since my diagnosis,  the DR  hammered me about it and  to say it for the 500th time he was right. He also said no caffeine, illicit drugs, or alchohol or he wouldnt treat me...so I gave up the caffeine the others were already gone.
