Balancing a checkbook... Oh yeah, that's that thing you have your spouse do because when you tried it you were always hundreds of dollars off every month and couldnt figure out why! What the frell is a "Checkbook" ZORG38420.9103703704Checkbook.... balanced.... ??

What is this you speak of?

Umm.... I'm lucky I actually keep a log of the cheques I write... never mind working out what I have left.

I have resorted to carrying cold hard cash in my wallet because I never knew what my account balance was, and often ended up with "Insufficient Funds" displayed on Interac purchases.

Ok. Let's be honest.....How many of you out there actually keep your check books balanced???

........My husband and I have no time for that sort of thing (sheepish grin here) ........

Are there AD/HDers out there that really do this??

Good topic,

I have never been good at balancing a check book, but I was good in math-go figure.  I really dont even know where my checkbook is, I think my husband hid it from me.. We try to live on a budget, we spend this amount every week on groceries, gas, etc. But I have always found a way to mess it up

My husband now handles the bills and the checkbook, me, I get an allowance.

Since the advent of internet banking and the debit card, I actually do have a clue to what my bank balance looks like.  I don't use cheque* books any more.

May cheque* books rest in pieces.

I stopped writing cheques several years ago. I was always looking at my bank balance & thinking that was what I had to spend!
The debit card is my preference. I don't like to carry cash because it just disappears.
I use telephone banking to find out my balance on errand days right before I go out the door. I keep telling myself that I have to start keeping a running balance so I know at any time what I have. Occasionally, when I call the bank, I totally forget my access number. I do not know when my service charges come off. I've been planning on looking into that for a few years now. Money management is definitely not my one of my talents.

Hee hee,  I can balance a check book really easy!

I just get anything that i can put my hand on,  like candle holder and slowly and gently put the check book on top!!!!!

walla.......... see its easy to do!

my problem?  we use the check card instead of cash, and I pull the thing out so many times on my "shopping sprees" that if I DID remember where the checkbook was, then I would forget to enter the purchase it in.....

I like atm's.....when youre in doubt about the balance, simply go check the atm...walla...instant "balance"...........we just make sure we don't go over that "balance" when we are in walmart!!!!!!

We just don't write checks anymore, cause people take their time cashing it, until sometimes, months later, and we forget about it, and boom they cash it, and our "balance" is all of a sudden at ....

we have banned the checkbook in favor of cashiers checks and money orders!!

Yes, we have our own little "system" and most people would probably think we are crazy the way we handle our finances......but HEY! As long as we got a system that works, who cares what other folks think??? the advantages of being an ADDer married to an ADHDer!!!!

I went to the bank today to make a deposit and actually LOOKED at the receipt the woman gave me.  I discovered there was 00 more in my account than I thought I had!!!  Definitely a pleasant surprise!  I do this periodically.  I'll make a deposit and then forget to record it.  Fortunately, I never do this with withdrawals because my boyfriend won't let me near the checkbook.
I used the debit card and hadn't written checks in years until I moved from Canada to the US and found out that I can't get by without writing checks here.  Not much different though, I still don't have a clue what my balance is, I just start paying in cash and checking the balance from the ATM slip after the middle of the month. Oh, and have a credit card as a back-up just in case that "declined" sign comes up at the storeThank God! I'm not the only one! I have both a personal account and a business account, neither of which I balance. I pay a bookkeeper to handle both. She finally accepts that I am not going to write anything down. She even writes my personal bills for me: electric, water, cable, etc. She is pretty strict about my putting my mail where she can find it . I am working on that. Her name is Nancy, and I say, "Everyone needs a Nancy!"My bank does that for me.

I hope.

I am in my 30s and I don't have a checking account per husband's rule....he took my account away because I never ballanced it and would use the overdraft line of credit as a credit card and I would use my debit card and charge up to the limit....so NO I DON'T HAVE CLUE! WHAT IS BALLANCING A CHECK BOOK?

I do know how...I just would never get around to it even though I would mean to...and I wouldn't write down my expenses incurred on my debit card so I had no idea how much I spent and I would forget and think I still had the money and I would buy some more and forget and then repeat repeat and then at the end of the month came I would find out I went into the Overdraft line of credit....

My husband pays all owed on all CC acounts every month...he is a perfectionist about his checking account....So I really ruffle his feathers....well I will just say it...I PISS him off when I did this so he closed the account....best think for our marriage.
